Attention Consumers:
Since many of epinions readers have indicated this is one of their favorite nonprescription cold remedies, I caution you that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has issued a public health advisory concerning the risk of "hemorrhagic stroke" to young women associated with the chemical phenylpropanolamine (PPA). The FDA has asked that all drug manufacturers voluntarily discontinue selling products containing PPA. Almost all of the Dimetapp cold medications contain this drug, as well as Dexatrim, Alka Seltzer, Tavist D, and Triaminic cold products.
You can see a complete list of all the products containing PPA that were pulled from pharmacy shelves at WebMD: WebMD - Retailers Voluntarily Pull Cold Medicines Following FDA Warning

and CVS on line drugstore at:
CVS Online Pharmacy Store

There is also an advisory warning not to switch to substitute products such as Ephedra, since the body converts Ephedra into PPA. That came as news to me.
This Health Warning was announced by the FDA during the beginning of November 2000. Not many consumers heard about it though, because at the time, the media was much more interested in the outcome of the Presidential race.
Please check your medicine cabinet for any of these products and read the Ingredient list on the label. The FDA may have ordered the voluntary removal of products containing PPA off the drugstore shelves, but there are only friends and relatives to inform us of this and tell us to check our endless supply of OTC cold cures. I made copies of the list of medications and distributed them to neighbors that do not have a computer. It might be a nice gesture if you sent this notice to everyone you care about, since it hasn't been in the media very much.
I'm sure the drug manufacturers are already updating the formulation in the medication listed as containing PPA. This is another reason for us to be educated consumers and to read labels. I'm positive it won't be too long before all these products are back in the stores minus the restricted ingredient.
Please, consider this epinion as my gift to you, the epinions public, to help you have a healthier 2001.
