Of all of the people in the world, my oldest son has got to be the biggest baby of them all when it comes to medication. He will absolutely NOT take any medication unless it tastes good or is easy to swallow and even at 16 years old, he still has not outgrown this!
When he was a toddler though he seemingly had nothing but continuous colds, sinus infections, and ear infections. As soon as he would get well, he would get another one shortly afterward. This became very frustrating because the more I tried to give him medication to help clear his sinuses the most he would throw the medication up or spit it out, which benefits nothing in return.
This is why I used Dimetapp Elixir for my son’s illnesses. It was the ONE product that he would take when he was younger that he would not spit out. And I have to admit that for him, it worked rather well for all of that time we used it, IF we had a lower grade of cold or sinus problem.
However, when those sinus problems turned into severe colds or congestion, we found that Dimetapp Elixir just didn’t cut it and we had to go to other medications which I had to skillfully hide within extremely sweet Popsicle instead.
Even now recently when he had a cold, he asked me if we had any more of that “purple” medicine in the cabinet because he wanted to take some of that instead of a cold capsule! I had to explain to him that Dimetapp Elixir and other related Dimetapp medications have been the subject of recall because of the possibility of strokes. He wasn’t too thrilled about that news because he had to take something else, but understands why this is not in our cabinet anymore.
However, if for some reason all of these situations with Dimetapp get reconciled, I will be happy to give Dimetapp Elixir a highly recommended rating. For children, and especially young children with picky tastes as my son, this product was a heaven sent. There are so few medications on the market that do not taste like medication and for those such as my two children who do have sensitive tastes, having a well tasting medication is a necessity.
Note: There is information on the ingredients and recommended dosages for Dimetapp Elixir are on their official web site as well as on the package. I believe that when a person buys this type of product, that information is important to know especially if you are allergic to particular ingredients. However, in my personal opinion, when I am looking for a product to help me, I want to know if the darned thing works! That’s why this and other over the counter medication articles that I will write do not have specs for these items.
