| melliott03's Full Review: Dimetapp Elixir |
Dimetapp Elixir! What WON'T you hear? NO MOMMY, YUCKY, I’M NOT SICK,
YOU CAN’T MAKE ME TAKE THAT and many more phrases I'm sure. There are
usually no problems getting a child to take this medication.
We have used Dimetapp for at least twenty years and probably longer. I know that we used to need a prescription to get it.
My oldest daughter always had trouble with her tonsils and ears when she was a little girl. Even taking her tonsils out didn't clear up the ear problems.
She was finally put on Dimetapp Elixir to try to dry up the middle ear. That worked for a short period of time. Finally, nothing worked any more and we had to have tubes put in both ears. That finally did the trick and we had no more ear problems.
Now we use Dimetapp strictly for colds and allergies. It comes in a yummy grape flavor and now you can also get it in cherry, although that might be the generic brand of Dimetapp.
The directions are easy to follow, 2 teaspoons every 4 to 6 hours for age 12 and over, 1 teaspoon every 4 to 6 hours for ages 6 to 12 and for children under 6 it is recommended that a physician be contacted. I have never had any problems giving 1/2 teaspoon every 4 to 6 hours to my children when they were between 2 and 6 but that is just with my
children. I can't recommend that to anyone else because each child is different and a doctor needs to prescribe the dose for each individual child.
We usually buy the 8 ounce bottle of liquid and also head for the generic kind when possible. I have found that both name brand and generic work equally well.
The older version of Dimetapp had alcohol in it but the newer one is alcohol free. I believe there are non drowsy formulas available also.
I would recommend Dimetapp for the occasional cold and allergy symptoms. It usually begins working within 30 to 45 minutes. Runny noses, itchy, watery eyes can now be a thing of the past.
