| MrsHall's Full Review: Dimetapp Elixir |
I starting buying Dimetapp with my fourth child. I used to buy the store brand medicines, because I figured in most cases they do the same thing for less.
Wrong!
If you read the ingredients as they are listed, that will tell you with most products how much of each is in the product. For example: If sugar is the first thing on the list, then there is more sugar than any other single ingredient.
This is not always true with medicines. I did not know this until, I had two sick kids and only $10. I was in the cough/cold isle forever debating over every bottle. My pharmacist (who knows me too well, lol) approached me to find out exactly what I was looking for. I told him that Katie had a stuffy nose but that Megan's allergies were acting up (she has asthma). Megan had a runny nose and usually I bought hystamine blockers for her, but they can be very expensive, especially if they are spitting them out and throwing them up. I told him my money issue, that I need to medicate two people for two symptoms for $10. He made a few suggestions, but I shot them down. I tried those before the girls are so hard to get to take their medicine, especially when they are sick and cranky. I am sure that most parents will agree that no matter how good the medicine is, it does you no good if they won't keep it down or take it in the first place.
He told me to try the Dimetapp. I personally remembered tasting it when I was little, so I know it was yummy. I didn't want to be a pain, but I was worried that it wouldn't be strong enough to help their symptoms. He assured me that it would go down like candy and work like a charm. He also, showed me the ingredients on the Dimetapp compared to the yucky tasting no name brand and two other leading brands. He explained that the amount of active medicines in each was not determined by the order it showed up on the label alone, but the percentage of medicine in one compared to the percentage in another. Dimetapp has a higher percentage of active ingredients even though they are listed in the same places. He told me that other medicines use more sugar to try and sweeten and thicken the liquid and that this takes away from the direct amount your child gets with each dose.
Well, as watery as it looked I knew it was tasty, so I knew they would take it. It cost me $8.99 for a large bottle. I was assured that if the girls had no major malfunctions that they would be feeling better way before the bottle was gone.
It worked like a charm! With in 20 minutes of giving the girls the Dimetapp, they were feeling better. They weren't 100%, but they were much more comfortable, which lead to less cranky, which lead to eating better, which lead to feeling stronger, which lead to being healthy!
In my opinion, you have to go with what works. Sometimes if it tastes good , it is good. But...read the ingredients and measure the percentages against each other to be sure. Don't be afraid to get to know your pharmacist and talk to him/her. They don't bite...only Dentists do that!!
