I was first introduced to Dimetapp Elixir back when my first child was 2 years old and I have been using it for cold and allergy symptoms with my kids ever since. The new formula that is out at the stores now is Children's Dimetapp Elixir.

The Children's Dimetapp Elixir that I get comes in 4 oz. bottle, with a little dosage cup. I mostly use it for the kids common cold symptoms and of course allergies. It helps relieve congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and last, but not least, itchy and watery eyes. All common symptoms of hay fever and/or the common cold.
It comes it a nice grape flavor that kids don't seem to shy away from as they commonly do with liquid medicines, at least from my experience. I don't get "ewww" from my kids when I tell them they have to take this medicine, which is great for me. I always hated fighting with them to take medicine. I have even used it myself from time to time for my allergy symptoms and Children's Dimetapp Elixir does a good job.
It used to contain alcohol back when I first started using it for my daughter, as most cold medicines did. Now they are alcohol free, which makes parents feel better about the product.
It takes about 20 minutes to kick in and then your child, or you, will start to feel some relief. The only downside to this, as with most types of allergy medicines, is that it does cause drowsiness, but the severity of the drowsiness depends on the person. Within a half an hour, it will make my 8 year old tired, but only affect my daughter a little bit. My 2 year old varies on how tired he gets when he takes it, sometimes it will make him tired and sometimes it won't.
The dose for adults and children over 12 years of age is 4 teaspoons every fours hours as needed and for children 6 to 12 it's 2 teaspoons every four hours. They say to consult your doctor for a child under 6 years old, but our doctor gave us the go-ahead to give it to my 2 year old when he had a cold, at a lower dosage of just 1 teaspoon.
Bropheniramine maelate and Pseudoephedrine HCI are the active ingredients, and they work pretty well.
All in all I think that Children's Dimetapp Elixir works great for relieving cold and allergy symptoms and has worked well for my family over the years. It's a must to have in our medicine cabinet, especially during the Spring, which is our biggest allergy season, and my kids don't complain about having to take it.
