Over two years ago I got married. When my wife and I moved into the apartment, just two weeks before the wedding, her parents gave us the Dirt Devil power stick. At first I was a bit cautious of this vacuum cleaner because of one at work. The one at work was one of the more expensive models and it could hardly clean the carpets in my office. Anyway, after they left I stuck it in the closet.
My fiancée still had two other vacuums; one was a Hoover and the other was and GE electric broom. I use the electric broom on the tile floors; I didnt want to use the Dirt Devil. Several weeks after the wedding the electric broom broke and I was forced to use the dirt devil. To my surprise it worked well, very well.. In fact it worked better than the electric broom. I use it to suck up all the cats hair (he is a messy cat) and other dirt in our kitchen and bathroom. Since then we moved into a townhouse and had wood floors installed. The Dirt Devil works on them too, without scratching up the floors.
Besides just being an upright vacuum, with its 20ft cord, also has some handy features. First of all I think it has a half horsepower motor that is good but not as powerful as some other vacuums. The head of the vacuum is a triangular wedge shaped piece of plastic with two slits for suction and three small glide wheels. The glide wheels only move forward and backwards but it still has a lot of maneuverability due to its weight. The wedge shaped head makes it easy to move along walls and get into the corner unlike other vacuums and brooms.
The head, of this vacuum also pops off. Because of this there is an attachable hose that connects where the head is normally attached. There are also two other attachments for the hose. The long, thin wedge shaped rod for getting in tight spots and under furniture. The other attachment for the hose is the piece for dusting (the standard piece that has the bristles on it). The dusting feature works great; I used it to clean the ceiling fans. All the thick dust, the previous house owners left for us, was sucked up; none of it fell onto the floor. When you are using the hose there is an extendible handle, built into the frame that allows you to easily carry the vacuum around.
The vacuum weighs about 8lbs and is a bagless system. A one-way valve allows dirt and things to enter the collection container without escape. It has a replaceable filter near the motor. The container is approximately two liters by looking at it. With the amount of cat hair and dirt we suck up the container only needed to be emptied only once in two years. I also found it to good when trying to capture bees, that get into our home, when we dont want to risk getting stung
Besides what I mentioned there arent any other features on this vacuum. The only problem that I know is that it is not powerful enough to do carpets. Use a more powerful vacuum, with rotating bristles, for that.
As far as vacuums go this Dirt Devil is quite a good unit for hardwood and tile floors. If you buy one you will most likely be amazed by it.
