Just waitin’ for a Garage Sale! Our Dirt Devil Power Stick

With springtime we have found the need to clear our home of unwanted junk & clutter. We have a large storage room that seems to have accumulated much of the past year or two’s castoffs. Among that select group off in the corner I noticed our Dirt Devil Power Stick. I think this is one product that ranked high in disappointment.
Three or four years ago my husband surprised me with a Dirt Devil Power Stick for Christmas. When will he get the idea that my idea of a nice gift is not a vacuum or toaster oven? I know, I know. Men like their gadgets and such. I understand and respect that. I have spent hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars buying such items for my husband for Christmas or his birthday (and just to say “I love you”). He wants them - they are on his “wish list”. A vacuum is not on mine...
Sorry, I didn’t mean to go off in a tangent.
One Christmas morning I received my Dirt Devil Power Stick Vacuum M083700. I will admit while I do not care for such gadgets for a gift this was a thoughtful gift on my husband part. I disliked dragging the upright vacuum I had at the time in from our mudroom. As we have mostly hardwood floors a stick vac should do the job.
The first thing I noticed was the Dirt Devil Power Stick Vacuum M083700 was lightweight - I’d say about ten pounds. It is bright red as are all Dirt Devil Products. This is a bagless vacuum which mean you have to (easily) remove and empty the dirt cup. Personally I do not like dirt cups - I always seem to end up with a nose full of dust...
The Dirt Devil Power Stick Vacuum M083700 has an attached hose and two on board tools for easy cleaning. The hose is not that long and I found I would have to pick up the vacuum in order to reach anything above eye level (ceiling dust webs for example). The attachments were a dusting brush and crevice tool (that you might use along the sides underneath your sofa cushions.
Our Dirt Devil Power Stick Vacuum M083700 had an easy to grab handle kind of built into the front. The triangular vacuum head is meant to make cleaning corners easy. There is an extended connector piece between the body of the vacuum and the vacuum head.
If you would like to vacuum under the table or even lower under a bed or sofa you can easily do this by lowering the handle toward the floor and turning slightly so the vacuum head swivels and the vacuum lays flat. Then you can move in and out under the item you are vacuuming with little trouble.
The Dirt Devil Power Stick Vacuum M083700 has a 20’ long cord which is a great feature. I like being able to vacuum a room without having to unplug and move the cord. If I use a centrally located outlet I could vacuum my living room & dinning room in one fell swoop. When you are done with the cord it is easy to wind up manually on the backside of the cleaner.
This sounds like a nice little sweeper doesn’t it? I suppose it may work well for some people but we didn’t form a lasting relationship.
The Dirt Devil Power Stick Vacuum M083700 runs on 5 Amps. In our house with five people - three of them somewhat sloppy little boys the power is just not strong enough to do a great job.
While it no doubt picks up dust on the bathroom floor it doesn’t pick up the cat hair from the one rug we have in the living room. It also doesn’t pick up the cat hair off sofa cushions or from the curtains (with forced hot air heat the cat hair does rise.). Try as they may to keep the food on their plate or in their mouth it always seems some grains of rice or renegade peas make their way to the floor.
Would I say the Dirt Devil Power Stick Vacuum M083700 is a bad vacuum?.
No, that wouldn’t be fair. This vacuum did not work in our family environment.
Who would it work well for?
I think this would be great for a cheap vacuum in a first apartment. In our experience it did not vacuum pet hair well. I would suggest this only if you have goldfish or hermit crabs (in other words hairless pets). This works great on hardwood or tile floor but not on carpeting. You might be able to get by with using this if your carpeting is that of a very flat indoor/outdoor nature.
For heavy duty cleaning - get a full size vacuum.
