| tandaw's Full Review: Discovery Toys Busy Time Playbox |
In my final year of college before I receive my degree in child psychology I have a number of studies to do on the learning values of play. Because I am also an educational consultant for Discovery Toys I have found that my customers and my own 2 children are wonderful test subjects. In a recent study I included the concept of early play intervention to build problem solving skills. One of the toys that stood out in the field was the Busy Time Playbox from Discovery Toys.
The Spring line catalog from Discovery Toys describes the Busy Time Playbox this way, "For busy hands and busy minds, our carry-all play box invites exploration in pattern, recognition, sorting by shape and color, memory and understanding of cause and effect relationships." I find this to be a very accurate description of the toy so I will move on to some more basic information.
The Busy Time Playbox is a very colorful 10"x6"x9" shape sorter and so much more. The sides are yellow, the top is blue, the ends are reds and the handle is yellow. On both sides of the playbox you will four shapes outlined in different colors. A blue T, purple circle, red square and green oval on one side. On this same side are four brightly colored gears. Two large gears on each end and the two smaller ones in the middle. On both of the large gears is a red knob just right for little hands to turn. The four gears all turn together and this is a great way for children to begin to learn about cause and effect as well as work on hand eye coordination.
On the opposite side the shapes are a red triangle, blue cross, purple heart, and green pentagon. Underneath the shapes on this side you find a blue swirly ball to spin and a purple squeaky triangle to push. Also there is a clean spinning toy filled with brightly colored beads to spin and listen too.
One end sports a mirror for your toddler to see his or her own smiling face in and the other end is the opening to retrieve the shapes from inside the box. This box stores all of the shapes right inside and under normal circumstances they will not fall out. However the shapes are easy to reach inside the yellow flap and pull out, so your toddler will be able to do this by himself early on.
This product has won an award from the Parent's Guide and is always listed as a top seller with the Discovery Toys Review Department. Some of the reasons for it's popularity are the toolbox shape that makes it portable and lets children play with it on the go. Another is because of the ease of storing the shapes inside and not losing the pieces.
The Busy Time Playbox is also a good toy for some children with special needs. It provides a multiple sensory experience for children who need the stimulation. It promotes exploration for various shapes, colors, designs and patterns. Matching the shapes and colors promote hand eye coordination and provide opportunities for success. Even children with low vision can benefit by learning to identify the pieces by shape. This toy invites a child to play and makes learning fun.
