| tandaw's Full Review: Discovery Toys Scooter Press and Go Giraffe |
Scooter the Press & Go Giraffe didn't look like a toy that would be much fun when I first saw the picture of him. I received a mailing from Discovery Toys for consultants previewing the new Spring Line toys and Scooter was listed in there. I just didn't think that I would want this particular toy for my kids or for my home demonstrations. However as soon as I played with Scooter Giraffe for the first time, I knew that we would have to have him in our home.
Scooter is designed for infants that are beginning to explore the world around them. During the first year when they begin to move without help from Mom and Dad they will need toys that encourage and reward their new found independence. While as parents we praise them for reaching this new stage in their life, we also want to provide them with entertaining toys that will keep them busy and out of harm. Scooter is just such a toy. Yellow with brown spots and mane Scooter is the cutest little animal toy we we have! Well, atleast in my opinion he is anyway.
Scooter is simple to work. Put him on the floor and press down on his back. His legs will roll apart and when you move your hand off his back he will zoom across the floor. Now this sounds like a small thing for a toy to do, but young children delight in watching and chasing Scooter . He is very easy to press down and operate making it fun for children because they can do it on their own. He also will roll on many different surfaces such as carpet, linoleum and hardwood floors. Careful though because he will also race across the kitchen table and counters as well.
Scooter is thought to teach a number of different lessons to children. Playing with him they learn about cause and effect. If I push down on his back and let go then Scooter will roll. Playing with him also helps increase gross motor skills and encourages thinking and problem solving skills as well. You can encourage your child in independent play by offering Scooter at a time when you have to be busy doing something else. He is a good toy to use while you are cooking an evening meal.
Hannah is 2 and she doesn't need any help with independent play. She needs play that will keep her out of trouble. Scooter is one of those toys that entertain and keep her out of the cabinets and from climbing on the kitchen counters. While I still have to keep Hannah under close supervision, she will play with Scooter allowing me to get a few things finished around the house. My son Alex is 6 years old and (shhhh.... don't let his friends know) he too still plays with Scooter some. Only when Hannah is playing with the toy of course, but he does play with him.
Scooter may not look like much when you first see him, but I think any infant will love this toy. If you have children with special needs to consider, this toy is good for those with low muscle tone. It is easy to press down on Scooters back to make him go, and will be encourage to these children to be able to do this for themselves. Scooter also encourages a child to crawl after him or try to walk behind him. This is good for the child that may need extra stimulation to learn to go on their own.
