jasonajohnson's Full Review: Discovery by Daft Punk
I got Daft Punk's Discovery for the same reason so many of my peers did, as we were impressed with their freshman album, "Homework". That, and "One More Time", the single, was growing quite popular in clubs at the time. Discovery was released in 2001 and today, over 8 years later, it is arguably the best electronic album made. I was inspired to write this review, as I was promoting a new electronic album and visiting several websites and forums on the subject. I was amazed by - not only how often Discovery came up in discussion, but also by the number of sites that had the album ranked #1 in their favorites. Why? Quite simply, attention to detail. Discovery was released more than 4 years after Daft Punk's freshman release, and those of you in the industry know that this is unusually long. Record companies are often conserned with maintaining the hype created when a band is first debuted. Typically, a sophmore release comes in a year if at all. This album was different. It was produced to be defining.
One element that you notice immediately is the use of distortion. The entire album incorporates a 'grittiness' that is very delicately blended so as to not interfere with the albums musicality. Another aspect to note is that the album contains both 'Big Beat' and 'Break Beat' rhythms, and an impressive balance of the two. Many other electronic albums of the time are overloaded with one type of rhythm. The balance shows the diversity of the album's French creators. Some tracks would be categorized as house today, whereas others would be categorized as downtempo, yet the album still has a cohesiveness that is complimented by the consistent use of flanges and distortion. There were clearly no quick mixes here. This album was tweaked and developed one measure at a time. Brilliant.
Daft Punk's Discovery defines the electronic movement in music, and the attitudes of the generation that consumed it. It is what all producers should strive to create, in terms of influence over their niche and blended diversity (or the opposite of cookie-cutter music). Discovery is quality electronic music, through and through.
