Disney Princess Enchanted Journey: Princesses go RPG

Written: Dec 30 '08 (Updated Dec 30 '08)
Pros:Interaction with Princesses, using a "magic wand", varying levels of difficulty
Cons:Many children will need parental assistance, need to sit very close to avoid cursor problems
The Bottom Line: Young female Wii playing Disney Princess fans will enjoy this game. However parents must be ready to provide some assistance along the way.

This Christmas, Santa brought my daughter (almost 4) Disney Princess Enchanted Journey for the Wii. Although I really did not know the goal of the game, my daughter has done well with the Wii games we already have, so I was confident she could figure out how to play this game, if at least with some parental help.

This is a role playing game (or RPG), which is not what I expected.  Your pixie (a verbal guide through out the game) will help you create your own character and then you will help the Disney Princesses with the assistance of your magic wand as you move through the Princesses' kingdoms.

The first step is to create a character. Your child can choose from various dresses, dress color, hair, etc.  I think my daughter enjoys this part of the game as much as playing the actual game.  Even once you have started playing the game, you can go back and change your characters' appearance. She does this often throughout gameplay.

The next step is an optional tutorial.  This will help your child understand the remotes and controls, so it is needed the first time your child plays Disney Princess Enchanted Journey. This game requires the use of the nunchuk. My daughter hadn't used the nunchuk before, so she had to get used to it.  You can use the control pad on the Wii remote or the control stick on the nunchuk to move your person.  The "Z" button on the nunchuk will allow your character to interact with other people through out the game.  The Wii remote is the magic wand.  Swinging your magic wand in specific ways will let you cast magic, and you will learn this in the tutorial.

Next you will start the game.  You will enter one of four princess worlds, and each world has three chapters.  The worlds are of varying difficulty. There is Ariel (easy), Jasmine (medium), Cinderella (medium) and Snow White (hard).  Your pixie will tell you this information.  Enter the world of your choice and follow your pixies' instructions to play your game.  The first time you play, it is suggested to go into Ariel's world. You will have tasks to complete along with mini games such as matching patterns and colors.  Your character will interact with characters along the way.  When all four worlds are completed there is a bonus mini game with Belle.

Our experience with Disney Princess Enchanted Journey
My daughter had some trouble in the beginning learning how to make her character move. In the beginning, I held the nunchuk and used the control stick when she asked for my help. Eventually, she did get the hang of it.

When she first started playing the game, either my husband or I would guide her though many of the activities.  Over a course of 2 days and about 2-3 hours per day, she and my husband completed all four worlds and unlocked the bonus game with Belle.  I was disappointed in the bonus game. I thought it would last as long as the other characters' worlds, but it was much shorter than I had expected.

We have only had this game a week but after playing for so many hours with assistance, my daughter is now able to get through some of the princesses chapters with little to no help from us. The tasks are the same each time you play, but so far she hasn't found it to be repetitive. She loves the interaction with the princesses. Her face will light up, especially with Ariel and Cinderella.

We found that you must sit very close to the TV, or else the cursor would often appear shaky. Even when we sat only a few feet away, it would still appear shaky.  The cursor is used during character set up and in some mini-games. Since you do not need the cursor throughout the entire game, this is something that is tolerable. This problem is acknowledged by Disney on the videogame support pages. They suggest sitting between 3-8 feet from the sensor, and to make sure the sensor bar sensitivity is set at the right level.

Other information
This game can be played with one or two people. My daughter prefers to play alone, so I do not know how it differs in a two player mode.
This game is rated E for Everyone.
Cost for the game is currently $19.99.

Overall
Snow White's world is the most difficult to complete. There were parts that I had to think about in order for us to continue in our game.  My husband plays many role playing games so I have become familiar with what is often expected in an RPG. If I had not been familiar with them, Snow White's world could have gotten confusing for me, and of course, a young child. As a parent, be prepared to sit with a younger child and help them along in some parts of the game.

My daughter has been enjoying her "enchanted journey" and she likes that she now has a Wii game of her own.   She will be four in a few months, so the game, with assistance, is good for younger gamers.  I would say that princess fans, maybe up to age eight, would enjoy Disney Princess Enchanted Journey.
