Arthritis Pain? Try Celadrin with Glucosamine!

Written: Jul 09 '08
Pros:Lessens costochondritis pain, no side effects
Cons:Takes time to notice the benefits
The Bottom Line: Doctor's Best makes a great product that has really helped my pain and inflammation of costochondritis. I love this product!

I used to suffer from a condition called costochondritis, which is an inflammation of the sternum. It happened to be at least 15 years ago, after my husband and I spent a summer doing a lot of fishing. The repetitive movement of my arms, and holding the fishing pole was hard on this area of my body, and the bones on my sternum were swollen. One is still larger than the other.

I went to three different doctors to find out what it was. My general practice Dr. told me I had some calcification on the bones, and he felt it was arthritis. A second MD and a general surgeon (who I had seen for some breast problems, friends had me scared that it could be breast cancer), both confirmed that I had costochondritis.

I had never heard of this condition, and wasn't happy with the advice both of these Dr.'s gave to me, which was to take aspirin every day for the inflammation, and to rest. I was instructed not to vacuum, sweep the floor, or to strain my chest muscles in any way. I can't begin to tell you the pain I was in! There were times I thought I was having a heart attack. These bones would ache terribly, and I'd get a burning pain in them that is hard to describe. After researching costochondritis on the internet, I learned that it wasn't uncommon for people to go to the ER thinking heart attack, and be diagnosed with costochondritis. The definition of costochondritis is inflammation of chest wall cartilage, causing pain and tenderness.

I suffered with this condition for years. It would get better, I'd return to normal life, and it would flare up again. From all that I read, it was supposed to be a temporary condition, but for some reason did persist for years in certain individuals. Lucky me.

I'm not 100% sure how I was introduced to the supplement called Celadrin, I think I read about it in Prevention magazine.

What Is Celedrin?

It's chemical name is cetyl myristoleate, and it comes in a pill or capsule form, even in lotions. I've had good success with a Celedrin lotion made by Avon. I've taken Celedrin by itself, but the formulation I'm taking now is blended with Glucosamine. It's the Doctor's Best formulation, containing 500mg of Glucosamine Sulfate and 500mg of Celedrin. My bottle reads that Celedrin is a proprietary blend of esterified fatty acid carbons of myristate, myristolcate, laurate, oleate, palmitate, and palmitoleate with tapioka.

These fatty acids are said to penetrate the membranes of the cell to provide lubrication. As the joints are lubricated, this reduces inflammation. Placebo studies were very encouraging, and scientists believe that Celedrin also improves one's strength as well as range of motion in the joints.

My Doctor's Best bottle reads Celedrin Complex with Glucosamine provides a combination of Celadrin and sodium-free glucosamine sulfate. Celedrin is a proprietary blend of esterified fatty acids that have been shown to benefit joint function and flexibility.

Does It Work?

Yes! It took about two months of taking Celedrin on a regular basis, but it is the only thing that actually provided relief. After years of suffering with my constochondritis, (and not real options available to me), I can honestly say that the Celedrin supplements have done wonders for me.

Initially I was taking 1050mg of pure Celedrin from Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocers, but have switched to taking this Doctor's Best formula, with added Glucosamine. I also take a supplement called MSM for allergies, which is also supposed to be great for arthritis. Although Celedrin all by itself did help, I have seen the greatest benefit from the combination of MSM, Glucosamine and Celedrin.

When I spend too many hours bent over my desk making my jewelry, I still get a mild burning sensation and I know it's time to give my hobby a break, but at least this product has allowed me to return to the activities that I love. I am even golfing now!!

I have been purchasing my Doctor's Best from a website called findsupplements.com, and this 90 tablet bottle retails for $34.99, but they sell it for $21.88. Vitacost now sells the same thing for $12.85, so I am definitely going to shop around when it's time to buy more. Of course the shipping rates to Alaska can vary drastically and I always take the combined cost into consideration when making my purchase.

The directions say to take it three times a day, but I only take it in the morning and in the evening and am doing fine on it. The front of the bottle says this is a "Joint Soothing Formula" and I would have to agree 100% with this statement. This formula has made a huge difference in my life, and I have absolutely NO side effects from the pills. I highly recommend Doctor's Best Celadrin with Glucosamine, and give this product 5 stars.
