| kurt_g's Full Review: Xerox DocuPrint 4508 Laser Printer |
I have owned a Xerox DocuPrint 4508 for about two years now. It was inherited from my wife's workplace, where she had it for a year or two. It's been a great printer, all things considered.
The DocuPrint 4508 is a personal laser printer. It's designed to be used by one person (perhaps two). It prints at 8 ppm at 600 dpi. What does this mean? It means it'll make a great printer for the home or SOHO (small office/home office). It will not be a great printer for a large company of a thousand people or so.
What's good:
* The reliability. The DocuPrint is reasonably thrifty with toner. Like most laser printers, it will happily stomp any inkjet on the market as far as cost of printing goes.
We have only had to change the toner cartridge once in two years. (Of course, we don't do a huge amount of printing at home, but still.) When we did, there was still toner in the toner cartridge; unfortunately the drum had gotten something smeared on it which was affecting the print quality. It's had only a few paper jams, not terribly often. We click print, it prints. Again and again, year after year.
* Setup. This printer is no longer manufactured, and it does not have some of the goodies of more modern printers, like USB connection or networkability. Still, setup is easy. Drivers for this printer are still available from Xerox's web site. Still, hooking up a printer cable is not too much to ask, and the toner cartridge is a single unit that contains drum and toner all in one. It is plug-n-play compatible and easy to share out.
* Print quality. The 4508 is not going to be your printer of choice for printing pictures -- first off, everything's going to be monochrome; secondly, it's only 600 DPI. That said, it prints grayscale fairly well, and I have always been able to read the maps that you get with mapblast.com, for example. (It's also true that a map that's a few square inches in length doesn't tend to be real helpful, but hey.) But for the everyday need of printing documents, it will serve perfectly well.
What's bad:
* No USB connection. Your standard, humdrum (and slower) parallel connection here.
* No network-readiness. You can share it out, of course, but it has to be hooked up to a computer to do this. (Yes, this isn't the end of the world, but still.)
* The DocuPrint 4508 needs to be manually fed envelopes. If you do a lot of envelopes, this is going to get annoying. (Of course, you could always do address labels, which the 4508 is perfectly happy to deal with.)
*Black and white only. Well, it's not an inkjet, and color laser printers cost the earth.
All in all, someone looking for a laser printer for a small office/home office would be very happy with the DocuPrint 4508. Its reliability and thriftiness with toner will make it welcome in any setup of that type.
