| dutchman28's Full Review: Xerox DocuPrint M760 InkJet Printer |
I have been considering a replacement color printer for my old trustworthy HP-855. I know XEROX took over the Tektronix printer line about a year ago and feel this printer reflects that companies great background in color printing. While it is true that this printer is physically larger than many of it's competitors it also appears to better built than those from the other vendors. The photo results on Kodak photo paper are great. I choose this model over the M750 because of it's faster printing speed and increased memory. I haven't done much text printing yet but that is not what I purchased the printer for. When I need to print text I stay with the cheaper to operate lazer printer. I like the individual color replacement cartridges. While I like the HP products having the print heads built into each cartridge I don't like having to replace a tri-color cartridge due to one color running out. To get a printer from HP with individual color cartridges I was looking at printers well out of my price range.
I'm glad that I waited till last Tuesday to order the printer since it took a $50.00 price drop on that day, The current list is now just $149.00. If the ink heads do clog they are a user replaceable part unlike Epson printers where a clogged print head requires a trip to a service center.
I have seen some complaints about the printing speed of the XEROX M7xx series printers. While it is true that it is not as fast at it's highest image quality as some of the other printers in this price rage I think the quality of it's output is superior. For my small volume photo usage I am more than willing to trade a little speed for print quality. If I could afford to pay two to three times as much I could find a faster printer but that would be over kill for my budget right now.
So far I have been operating under Windows 98 SE and using a parallel cable. I intend to also test it out under 95 and 2000 and with a USB cable. I have already downloaded updated drivers. Windows 2000 drivers were not available when the printer shipped from the factory. I like being able to choose software packages from a list but wish the paper sampler had been included in the box. Let's just hope XEROX is in this market for the long run and keeps up good driver support for out of production models.
