| s76ers's Full Review: Dogfish Head Punkin Ale |
Looking for a different beer other than the ubiquitous Bud or MGD I had heard good things about Dogfish Head and had tried a sample once at an athletic event, of all places. It was Late October and the liquor store had a bottle of DOGFISH HEAD PUNKIN ALE on display. So I plunked down the $9 for a 4 pack of PUNKIN ALE...
After returning home, I immedaitely opened the bottle to find a pumpkin/sugar aroma. The beer is somewhat sweet with a VERY BOLD, UNIQUE, PLEASANT TASTE; similar to the of pumpkin bread. I found this a welcome chage after drinking mostly Bud lager and an occasional Sam Adams for the majority of my life. You will probaly not want to have more than 3 or 4 in one sitting. Note one bottle is 7% ABV (Bud = 5%) so you don't want to go driving anywhere soon after!! The IBU of this beer is 24. The IBU of Bud is around 15. Despite being somewhat sweet, it also has some degree of bitterness.
PUNKIN ALE is brewed with pumpkin, cinnamon, brown sugar and nutmeg-- I could not find any other pumpkin ale brewed with similar ingredients at a large liguor store featuring over 1000 different microbrews.
It is difficult to find a bottle of PUNKIN ALE outside of the Mid-Atlantic region, and many local liquor stores did not stock PUNKIN ALE, but could order. Beer is brewed by Dogfish Head (Microbrewery) in Milton, DE a small town (pop. 6000) located in Southern Delaware
