Dogzilla, by Dav Pilkey, is an unusual and silly tale made to resemble a motion picture, rather than a mere childrens picture book. This quirky Pilkey tale is his second text feature starring Flash as the Big Cheese, Rabies as Professor Scarlett OHairy, Dwayne as the Soldier Guy, and introducing Leia (the dog) as the Monsterall pets residing with the author.
Just as readers were greeted with cover art reminiscent of an old King Kong movie poster for his book Kat Kong, this humorous Pilkey tale depicts his corgi, Leia, as the immense dinosaur Godzilla towering over a city landscape.
Artwork throughout Dogzilla is a clever blend of manipulated photography, acrylic paint, and collage. Accompanying the silly illustrative artwork is creative, zany text portraying an amusing, satirical mousy terror suggestive of the classic thriller, Godzilla. This spoof, with dog and mice characters, is a full-color illustrative story which reads like an old-time radio show, peppered with numerous tongue-in-cheek puns, parodies and one-liners.
Silliness ensues as Dogzilla crashes the annual 'Barbecue Cook-Off' of the citizens of Mousopolis -- storming the city and "doing those things that come naturally to dogs" (chasing cars, chewing furntiture and nibbling storefronts, digging up bones in the mouse museum, etc).
Accompanying these illustrative depictions are mousy soldiers screaming in terror upon attack by doggy breath and quips such as "What are you, men or mice?," "You simply cant teach an old dog new tricks," "Well, Ill be dog-goned." etc.
This book has been rated EG for Extremely Goofy and might contain material that is too goofy for grown-ups, no animals were harmed in the making of this book.
Unlike the finality of the ending in Kat Kong (wherein the feline monster dies), Dogzilla is merely run out of town by the prospect of a bubble bath. A much happier turn of events, thus Dogzilla, with its amusing dog and mice adventures of Mousopolis is a tale befitting animal loving children and adults of all ages who possess a healthy sense of humor.
