sparkospunky's Full Review: Don Tomas Special Edition Connecticut No. 600 5 Pa...
I recently went on a golf trip to Orange Beach with my regular group from my local country club, and there are three of us who are avid cigar smokers. As cigar smokers are wont to do, we exchanged sticks, and one of the cigars that I was offered was the Don Tomas Special Edition Connecticut No. 600. I had never heard of the brand, but the cigar just looked good when my buddy was smoking it, so I dealt him a Montesino Robusto in exchange and fired it up. It was a very pleasant experience--one so pleasant that when I got home I ordered a box of 25 and I accepted delivery of another box of 25 on this very day. Allow me to share my impressions with you.
The Don Tomas Connecticut that I smoked and am smoking is the classic Toro size with a length of 6 inches and a ring size of 52. A natural USA Connecticut shade wrapper envelops Habano seed Mexican and Nicarauguan filler, and a rather plain looking red, white and gold label circles the cigar. This stick is firmly wrapped and feels solid throughout its length. The wrapper is almost seamless, and the look and feel of the cigar lets you know that it's made with a lot of care and attention to detail and quality.
The Don Tomas Connecticut lit very easily and the draw was almost perfect--not too breezy, but not so hard that you had to strain to get the smoke. The burn was even and almost flawless, and with most of these cigars I smoked I only had to relight once or not at all. Overall, this is a "cool" smoke, with no tendency to heat up as I smoked it down to the nub.
One of the most pleasing things about a cigar, at least to me, is the development of the initial ash upon lighting. I was pleased to see about an inch and a half of grayish white ash appear before it dropped off into my ash tray.
The Don Tomas Connecticut is a mild cigar--I detected hints of vanilla, nuts and cedar in its flavor, and these notes seemed to be pretty well balanced. This smoke doesn't have the complexity of a more robust, full bodied cigar, but the overall effect to me was pleasing and satisfying.
The aroma was pleasing too--the smell of this cigar to me is what a cigar is supposed to smell like, and people have actually commented to me about the pleasing aroma of the Don Tomas Connecticut.
What's really nice about this cigar is it sells for about $3 a stick, and for the quality, I think it's a great value if you're looking for a solid, everyday smoke.
