naphtalia's Full Review: Dr. Bronner's Bronners Bar Soap Peppermint 5oz
If you're into aromatherapy, you know that the smell of peppermint is meant to be invigorating. If there's anything to that idea, one whiff od Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Pure-Castille Soap should leave you thoroughly invigorated. All of Dr. Bronner's scented soaps pack a punch, but none more than the peppermint. (If you don't like scented soaps, Dr. Bronner offers an unscented "Baby Mild" soap, too.)
I've been coming across Dr. Bronner in health food stores and student co-ops for years. The company itself has recently passed its 60 year anniversary. The product can be difficult to find if you don't frequent such places. It's no wonder that those places stock it. Dr. Bronner takes pride in being using no animal products, conducting no animal testing, being certified both organic and fair trade. I don't know if it's worth a special trip to pick up this soap, but it's certainly worth spending a little extra on this soap.
From the Dr. Bronner web site, the ingredients in the Peppermint bar soap include: Saponified Organic Coconut, Palm & Olive oils (w/ retained Glycerin), Water, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Peppermint Oil, Organic Mentha Arvensis, Salt, Citric Acid, Vitamin E. All oils and essential oils are certified organic to the National Organic Standards Program. The bar is wrapped in paper which contains Wrapped in 10% hemp-flax / 90% post-consumer recycled paper from Living Tree Paper Co..
While my personal preference is for the liquid soaps, the bar soaps are easier for me when travelling. I will especially make sure when I go to circus camp with a bunch of hippies this summer that I bring this along. It produces a nice lather that rinses off without being drying. As I get older, I'm more prone to dry skin, so something that cleans without stripping oils out of my skin is good. It has a nice tingly feeling. While heavily scented with peppermint, I do not find the smell remains on the skin for extended periods.
A friend's little girl on using this soap noted to me that, "It smells better than it tastes." I haven't pursued finding the truth of this statement, but am willing to believe she is correct.
Dr. Bronner tends to be more expensive than other soaps. A bar will run you about $4.00. It is possible to find 6 packs for about $16-18. I love the soap and am willing to spend a little extra for a top quality product that is made in the most humane and ecologically considerate way its producers can find. If you can find it, I can highly recommend it.
