Pros: Comfort, looks, solid construction.
Cons: Availability of colors, may not be true to size for all.
Driving by a Famous Footwear a while back, I spotted a giant banner announcing a clearance sale. Always curious, I stopped to have a look. When I spotted this Dr. Scholl Dance Mule, I was immediately drawn to the funky look and the platform sole.
What are they made of?
To give you an idea of a close-up look of this shoe, it looks similar to the construct of a Croc brand shoe. The Dr. Scholl Dance Mule features a soft foam upper with six oblong cutouts, a matching-colored, textured, stitched, polyurethane strap with a Dr. Scholl's buckle, and a closed-cell foam platform rocker sole that measures 1.5" under the ball of the foot, and rises to a height of 2.75" under the heel. The footbed has an additional foam insole for maximum comfort, and is molded into the shoe. The bottom of the sole is patterned with the trademarked phrase by Dr. Scholl, "feel crazy good" all over the bottom.
Am I in "like" or "love"?
I'm in love. I like the idea that these shoes don't have a run-of-the-mill look. After trying on the first pair, I did notice that the strap/instep hit a little far down on my foot, so I tried the next size up and got a great fit. I think 1/2 size up would have done the trick, but these only come in whole sizes. At $38, I've found that to be quite cheap as I wear these very often.
I'm impressed with the construction of this shoe as everything is molded together as if the entire shoe were carved out of a block of foam, except for the strap. The strap is stitched onto the sides of the shoe using very thick thread, and appears exceedingly sturdy. I'll be surprised if the strap ever starts to separate from the rest of the shoe.
Once I found the correct size and adjusted the buckles to fit my feet, I walked around the store for quite a while in these mules/clogs. They are as comfortable as walking around in a pair of tennis shoes. The rounded toe provides plenty of room, and allows the wearer's feet to move in a natural motion. I thought it might be possible that my heel would want to stray to one side or another while walking, but I didn't find that to be the case, which I attribute to having adjusted the buckle appropriately.
I have worn these shoes without socks while wearing shorts and capris. While my feet did have a slight tendency to sweat, that did not adversely affect my experience. I've also worn these with socks while wearing jeans. I experienced no problems while wearing socks. If I get these dirty, I just wipe with a damp cloth and they're ready for the next wearing.
These mules come in a variety of colors including red, hot pink, turquoise, black, pewter, and gold. I have them in both black and gold. In the fall and winter months, I've only been able to find them in pewter and black. The "gold" color is actually tan...the only part that is actually gold to me is the strap across the top of the foot. It resembles patent leather, and is patterned like snakeskin, which adds a fun little kick to these already funky-looking shoes.
I do recommend these shoes without reservation. They're a great casual shoe that are comfortable and fun to wear. I reach for these shoes every chance I get, as I know that even if I'm going to be on my feet all day, my feet will remain pain-free. If I worked in the medical field where clogs are the norm, I do believe they would be in my rotation of work footwear.
I will continue to wear these shoes throughout the fall and winter. I believe the only time I wouldn't wear them is during inclement weather.
You can order these shoes online at http://www.drscholls.com for $38 with free shipping, or you should be able to find these in a few select shoe stores.
Four fun and funky stars!
