We never even heard of this series before me and my family wanted to get a new RPG game for the Playstation 2. So my dad went shopping one day to find a new game. We really have only played turn based RPG's back when we first got the game. So that's how my dad came to buy this game since it was an RPG and it was also turn based. As soon as dad got home with the game we started to play the game. The game turned out to be really fun and easy to play. To find out more about this game please keep reading.
The story starts off with the twisted jester Dhoulmagus who was trying to steal a scepter that had extraordinary magical powers that was confined within a castle. He ended up breaking the seal that was protecting the scepter and he awakens the powers of the sceptre and puts a foul curse over the whole kingdom. This curse caused time to freeze and enchanted vines to envelope the whole castle and all the people within it. The King and Princess of the castle were turned into strange new forms by the vile magic. It so happens that there was one person who escaped the cures unscathed. This person is you and its up to you to restore the kingdom to normal and rescue all of its inhabitants.
The hero of the story is actually you and as your adventure unfolds you will meet up with other interesting characters, and some of these characters will even join you. Here is a short description of each of the characters you will meet and be joined by including the hero:
The Hero (You) - He is a royal guard who had to leave when the castle had a curse put on it. Since he was trained as a royal guard is proficient with swords, spears, and boomerangs.
Yangus - He is used to be a bandit and he talks with a strange accent. Ever since Yangus got together with you he calls you "guv" and treats you as his trusted "guv." He is very powerful and favors axes, clubs, and scythes to fight with.
Jessica - She is the only daughter of an aristocratic family that comes from a small village. She acts like a tomboy and she is always arguing with her mother. She is respected by many of her fellow villagers. She is a budding sorceress and she is not only adept at casting combat spells, but she also wields short blades, whips, and staves.
Angelo - He is a Templar knight who has sworn an oath to protect his abbey from anything that harms the abbey. Although he seems to be more into gambling and beautiful women than protecting the abbey, and because of that he is somewhat scorned by his fellow templars. He is competent with swords, bows, and staves, and he also can cast many different recovery spells.
Trode - He is your strange looking traveling companion. Even though he looks so ugly and hideous on the outside he speaks with a royal tone that is befitting a king.
There will be many towns to visit along the way and each town has many useful places to visit. Each town has a Church that you can visit. There are five services offered at the church and these include: Confession, which allows you to save your game, Divination, which allows you to see how much experience points your characters need to reach the next level, Resurrection, which of course brings a party member back to life, Purification, which curse any of your characters of poison, and Benediction, which removes a cursed item that you couldn't remove any other way. Towns also have Weapon, Armor, and Item shops that you can visit while coming through a town. There is also an Inn at every town where you can stay and rest to recover your party's HP. You can either stay overnight or rest until evening.
There are three types of maps in this game and they are Town Maps, World Map, and Dungeon Maps. To open the map and view it just press the square button and to put it away just press the triangle button. The town map has symbols for each of the different buildings that are located in the town. The world map of course shows the map of the whole continent you are currently on. Dungeon maps shows the whole area of the dungeon that you are in when you open the map. Of course you don't automatically get the map when you enter a dungeon you have to find it somewhere in the dungeon. You also have a compass that helps you get your bearings straight especially after you fight monsters.
There is actually day and night on this game and there are different things that happen at night that don't happen during the day. For example, at night you will find stronger enemies in a certain area whereas in the day time you will find different and easier enemies. People usually have different things to say at night and the shops aren't usually open at night.
Another neat thing about this game is that there are different modes of transport that you can take other than walking everywhere. One of these modes of transport is a ship. The ship allows you to reach places that you couldn't reach before like a city on a different continent. You will also find monsters while sailing the sea on your ship. The other mode of transport are the Great Sabrecats and this mode just lets you get around on land faster. Also while on the sabrecat you won't run into any monsters, but you have to have a certain item before you ran ride these great sabrecats.
There are four different commands you can use while you are moving about the big world. These four commands are: Talk/Interact, Confer With Party, Map, and Main Map. The Talk/Interact command is used when you go up to a person and talk to them. You can sometimes get really important info when talking to people. When you forget what you are supposed to do you can always ask one of your party members and to do this you need to press the start button and you can get advice from your party members on this screen. Then there is the Map and to open the map you have to press the square button. Whenever you forget which way you are supposed to be going or you forget where a place is just open the map to check. Then there is the main menu which can be opened by pressing the circle button. When you open the main menu the main menu window comes up. There are four command tabs on the main menu that you can choose from.
The first command tab is the Items tab which of course is where you can view all the items that you and your party members have in their possessions or in the carry bag. Each character can have up to 12 items in their inventory and when an item has a E mark that means that item is currently equipped and when there is a X mark by it that means it can't be equipped. When you select an item a list of item subcommands pop up. These subcommands are Use, Transfer, Equip (Remove), Discard, and Nothing. Of course the use command allows you to use the selected item if possible. Transfer allows you to move the selected item to one of the characters inventory from the bag or from one characters inventory to another characters inventory. The equip command allows you to equip a weapon, armor, shield, helmet, or accessory to a character of your choice. The Discard command allows you to get rid of the selected item if you choose to, and of course the nothing command allows you to do nothing to the selected item if you choose it.
The next command tab is the Magic menu tab which allows you to use field magic, which are spells and abilities that are used outside of battles and not in battles that you or your party members have mastered.
The next command tab is the Attributes menu tab which contains many statistics, and lists of magic and traits that your characters have. The attributes that are listed for the characters include: HP, MP, Lv, Sex, Strength, Agility, Resilience, Wisdom, Attack, Defence, Exp, and Skills.
The last command tab is the Misc. menu tab which contains many useful commands. These commands are: Heal All, Tactics, Line-Up, Equipment, Settings, Help, and Battle Records. The battle records show you the list of different monster you have defeated so far and it also shows a list of all the items you have collected so far.
Now I will talk about the battles in this game which are of course turn based like all the other Dragon Quest games. This is another game that has random encounters instead of running into actual enemies its a random encounter which means you have no idea what you are going to face. When you start a battle it switches over to the battle screen and at the top of the battle screen is the status window. The status window shows a small headshot of the characters and their level, HP, and MP. In the middle of the screen is where all the enemies are lined up. At the bottom left corner is where the battle command window shows up. There are four main battle commands you can choose from and they are: Fight, Flee, Intimidate, and Tactics.
The fight command initiates a battle with the monsters you are up against. There are six subcommands under the fight command. These subcommands are: Attack, Abilities, Spells, Items, Defend, and Psych Up. The attack subcommand has the character regularly attack with the currently equipped weapon. The Ability subcommand can be chosen when you want a character to use one of its abilities on the monster. The Spells subcommand is the option you choose when you want your character to use a spell they have learned on a monster. The Items subcommand of course allows you to have a character use a item on another character or his or her self. Of course the defend subcommand causes the character to defend instead of attack. The last subcommand Psych Up is a new feature that was introduced to this game. When a character Psych's Up they will become more powerful and when your character reaches a state of "high tension" their next attack will do massive damage to the monster.
The next battle command is Flee which of course lets you flee. When you select flee your characters will automatically try to run from the battle. Unfortunately there will be times when the monsters won't let you flee from a battle. The next battle command is Intimidate and when selected your character will try to intimidate the monsters. When a monster is intimidated the monster will be knocked on the ground and won't get to attack until the next turn. The last battle command is Tactics which basically lets you change the battle tactics of your party members.
The enemies in the game are pretty easy at the beginning of the game. As you get farther the enemies will get harder to defeat. There is usually a boss at the end of every dungeon or area you have to go through. The bosses are of course harder than the enemies in the particular area. Just like the enemies the farther you go through the game the harder the bosses get. There will be times when you have to stop and train before going farther in the game especially when it gets closer to the end of the game.
Another new feature in Dragon Quest VIII Journey of the Cursed King is the Skill System. These skills refer to individual attributes, such as weapons proficiencies and distinctive characters that you and your party members have. When you gain skill points you can use them to increase your skill level of a certain attribute. When your skill level increases you will be able to learn new spells, abilities, and stats like strength and defence. After you reach a certain level of experience you will start to get skill points every time you level up, and you get to allocate the skill points you get among your five skills.
There are many full places to visit and things to do in this game. There is a big casino in one of the cities in the game. At the casino you can play slot machines, bingo, and roulette. When you win a game you get tokens and you can spend your tokens to get some special prizes. These special prizes can only be gotten at the casino for lots of tokens. Another fun place to visit is Princess Minnie's Castle. Minnie is the Princess of Medals and she collects mini medals. You will find mini medals throughout your journey and you can give them to Minnie in exchange for great items.
The directional buttons are used to move the character on screen and it also is used to move the cursor. The left analog stick also is used to move the character on screen and is used to move the cursor. The right analog stick is used to rotate the view. The select button is used to display battle records. The start button is used to confer with party. The L1 button is used to rotate view left and it is used to move one tab left on the menu screen. The L2 button is used to align view behind party leader and to cancel. The R1 button is used to rotate the view left and move one tab right on menu screen. The R2 button is used to toggle first-person view. The X button is used to confirm, talk, lift, climb, and open. The circle button is used to display the main menu and confirm. The triangle button is used to cancel and the square button is used to view the map, cancel, and close all windows.
The graphics in this game or animated and not realistic. The characters are very detailed for being animated and the monsters are very creative too. The world of Dragon Quest VIII Journey of the Cursed King is really detailed too. I think they did a great job on the animation of this game. To me it doesn't really matter if its animated or realistic the graphics don't really matter all that much to me.
The sound in this game is real catchy and cool. I have never played any of the other Dragon Quest games so I am sure if the music and sound is the same as the other Dragon Quest games or not. The music for the whole is great and cool. I really like the music they have when you are in a battle.
Overall this is a great game I am not sure how the other Dragon Quest games were but I think any true Dragon Quest fan will like this game. This game is easy to learn that almost anyone can play this game.
