amelia_walpole's Full Review: Dream Matte Mousse Foundation
My foundation of choice at the present time is Maybellines Pure Makeup. However the tube I purchased not too long ago is already running out. Normally face makeup lasts me much longer. So over the weekend when I went to the store to get another tube, I changed my mind at the last minute and decided to try the Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation for the first time. I was going to try the Dream Matte Mousse before I tried the Pure Makeup, thanks to a friend who had many good things to say about the Mousse. I figured since I was at the same display and it was only $2 more than the Pure Makeup, I had nothing to lose. So I purchased a glass pot of the Dream Matte Mousse in Light 3, Natural Ivory As far as I know, there is no powder product out on the market that goes with the Dream Matter Mousse. I use a Cornsilk shine control powder (no color) over the mousse as needed.
I have no idea what product started the mousse craze, but now it seems as though every makeup company has their own whipped cosmetics. Avon has their Dewy Soufflé and whipped foundation lines. Sue Devitt, CoverGirl, and Tigi Bed Head also have theirs. The Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation is my first introduction into the world of super-light facial makeup, and I am unsure at this point if I like the results or not.
Whip it. Whip it good.
The Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation comes in eight colors- Ivory, Nude, Fawn, Caramel, Cameo, Sand, Sun Beige, and Cocoa. The round glass pot the product comes in is about 1 and 1/8 inch tall, and 2 inches in diameter. It holds .64 oz of foundation. The top of the pot is made of colored plastic that matches the shade of the foundation itself, and screws on and off. The cap is slightly wavy in shape to give it a more pleasing look. The sticker on the top of the cap features the Maybelline logo, the product name, and the color and number. The sticker on the bottom of the pot has the list of ingredients.
According to Dictionary.com, to whip something (other than beating the living daylights out of it) is to mix in air and cause expansion. That is exactly what you get in this foundation. The consistency is very light and fluffy, and this is what I was taken with as soon as I opened the foundation pot at home. I ran my finger gently over the top layer of the mousse and I noticed that the formula doesnt drip, which is fabulous if youre like me and often find foundation drips on your shirt. The foundation feels slick as you rub it on, almost like grease, but thats because the foundation particles are whipped so airy and fine. The formula glides onto my skin easily and blends in well. The color I picked out (which is the same color I use for the Pure Makeup) goes on a little dark at first, but it will lighten up to your natural color (assuming you picked the right color that matches your complexion) as you blend.
The coverage can range from light to heavy, depending on how much you blend into your face. Heavier coverage can be cakey, but not nearly as obvious as other foundations.
But is it really Dream-y?
I am not really sure if the Dream Matte Mousse is anything super-special. I thought I read somewhere that this product is oil-free, yet I cannot find any indication of this anywhere on the internet. An hour after applying the mousse, my nose is shiny. My cheeks feel like an oil slick. The makeup seems to sit on my skin after I apply it, not really absorbing like most foundations. Ive also noticed that the foundation color can appear pale on my face in certain light.
So if anything, this makeup is a novelty. Its soft, airy, fun to apply, has a good range of colors, and doesnt drip like liquid foundations do. But I dont find this foundation to be anything fresh and new compared to what I have used before.
Luckily the product doesnt have an offensive scent. It hardly has any scent at all, actually. I havent developed any irritation from using this product either.
These are from Maybellines website. My comments are in italics.
- Revolutionary whipped formula provides an air-soft, perfect matte finish coverage, with a weightless feel. (The formula certainly is whipped, air-soft, and does cover with a weightless feel. However, the matte finish doesnt last long, especially on an oily t-zone like mine)
- Breakthrough technology with flexible, silicone polymers that help prevent caking. (Caking generally doesnt occur unless you put the foundation on super-heavy)
- Long-wearing formula will not clog pores (I dont have a problem with acne so I rarely break out when I use cosmetics, and this time is no exception. I have no clogged pores. But I dont notice the formula lasting very long. I usually have to do a touch-up within an hour)
Finis
For what its worth, the Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse is a cute novelty product that does manage to hold up on some of the claims. But I dont see anything about this foundation that makes it stand out from others, with the exception of it being whipped and airy. And that doesnt mean anything if it doesnt work very well. It seems to in some ways, and not so well in others.
I am not sure if I will purchase this product again. Nor am I so sure about the Pure Makeup either, considering that I went through it faster than I have other foundations. I might just try a totally different product next time. Only time will tell.
I paid $6.98 for the Dream Matte Mousse. You can find it online at Ulta.com, and local stores like Wal-Mart and Walgreens.
