Didn't flap quite like I wanted it to.
Written: Feb 12, 2012 (Updated Feb 12, 2012)
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Comes installed on a shaft, and fits the Dremel Tool
Cons:Didn't really perform very well at all.
The Bottom Line: A disapointing accessory in a long line of useful accessories.
Background
I was doing to restoration on the Mid Life Crisis Car, and I needed to remove some pitted rust spots on some metal straps. I started with a wire brush, but that didn't quite cut it, if you know what I mean.
I have Dremel tool, and I picked up this flap wheel, along with two finishing abrasive buffs.
About the product
This product comes installed on a shaft, that is 1-5/16" to the flap wheel hup. This is helpful since you don't need to screw it onto one of the arbors that are provide as part of the kit. This shaft installs into your typical Dremel tool collet.
The abrasive "flaps" are 3/8" wide, with 3/8" of the flap extending beyond the hub. The hub itself is 1/2", so the overall diameter is 1.25". The abrasive grit is 120. This has a maximum allowable speed fo 35,000 RPM.
How does it work?
As I mentioned, I intended to use this to remove some pitted ares of rust from a strap. So I chucked this up in the dremel tool and set the speed to a little shy of half way. And I started on a non-visible portion of the strap to see how it would work.
I was disapointed with the performance. It seemed to me that the flaps were to stiff to allow them to sand the surface. There was some scratching of the surface taking place, but very little material removal. I tried changing the speed up and down a bit, but that didn't yield any improvements.
After only a few minutes of trying to use this, I gave up and switched to another Dremel Product: the finishing abrasive buffs.
Recommendations
After trying this for a short time, I gave up in frustration. I really could not recommend this to my friends or Epions readers. You may find other uses for this. If you do try it, good luck.
