Tough Tires

Pros: Tread Design, Price, Tread Compound, Quality.
Cons: 2 Ply side wall.
The Bottom Line: My next set of tires will be Dunlop.

Years ago when I was much younger and radial tires were becoming the rage. I worked in a small tire shop. In those days an aggressive open block tire could only be had in a bias ply tire. They were stiff, noisy, and prone to flat spot when cold. A lot has changed in 18 years. In the early 90's I put myself though college selling tires for Western Auto. One of the things I noticed was the number of companies offering real off road radial tires. During this same time period I became very active in the sport of rock crawling. Over the years I have seen just about every tread design, brand, and construction type used to battle the off road elements. When torturing tires as we do, we know that we will destroy our tires before we use them up. Needless to say, a rock crawlers tire expense can be frightening. I used Cooper made tires for years because they are so cheep. However they are made with very hard compounds which makes for poor rock traction. This also causes the tire lugs to be torn from the casing. The Dunlop Mud Rovers on the other hand are very durable. They wear surprisingly well and still get great traction. The side walls are very flexible giving them a smooth ride and excellent traction but lend themselves to side wall punctures. I use to replace my tires every 12 to 15 months because of rock damage. When I switched to the Dunlop tires, I started getting twice the service.My current set are 30 months old and sport several side wall plugs but they keep taking more abuse. The tread works great for snow, mud, dirt and of coarse ROCKS... My next set of tires will be Dunlop.
