Pros: Affordable, Durable, Good Sound for a mini system
Cons: The only possible con would be that it does not come equipped with inputs.
My family loves music and the louder it is, the better. Yeah! Yeah! I know that is not healthy - but it is, what it is. It is normal for the boys and I to sing along with our favorite songs on the way to and from school. Only one of us (my middle son) can carry a tune, but we sing anyway. Before Christmas, my middle son was the only one to have a boombox of his own and it wouldn't play cds for him. There was no question that they would like to have their own radio for their own rooms.
Locating, Purchasing and the Price
I had eye-balled the Durabrand CD2160 Shelf System for several weeks at Wal-mart. I had no intentions to spend a lot for the units because I planned to buy three of them for children. I just wanted something that would be easy for them to operate, durable and powerful but not TOO Powerful. I also didn't want something that looked cheap. I shopped around, but I couldn't find anything to compete with what Durabrand offered me with this small system for the price. I purchased three Durabrand CD2160 Shelf Systems at Wal-mart for $39.99 each.
Describing Durabrand CD2160 Shelf System
It is portable and can be moved easily, but if you are needing a stereo to take on beach trips and camping trips you can pass this one by. The Durabrand CD2160 Shelf System is power supplied by plug (AC 120v) only with a power consumption of 16w. There are two external speakers, left and right side that are wired to the main system. The speaker hook up is labeled in the back of the unit.
The system uses a wire antenna that just hangs loosely and can be hidden out of sight with no problem.
You can easily change between cd, tuner and standby with a small sliding button.
This mini system is black in color and comes with a 5 cd changer, am/fm radio, storage compartment for cds, headphone jack for listening with headphones (not included) and a remote control.
5 cd changer
The top of the Durabrand CD2160 Shelf System lifts up where you can place the five cds. They lay in their own slot sideways and once in place you just lay the lid back in position. It will only plays 5 inch (standard size) cds. It is simple to operate the cd player. The buttons displayed for the cd player are skip disc, skip/search, play/pause and repeat. The repeat button will allow you to repeat all discs, random play, repeat all tracks, repeat one track or program play. The cd player information is displayed digitally.
The am/fm radio frequencies are obtained by a knob that twists (analog). Extremely easy to operate and fool proof.
storage compartment for cds
The storage compartment is located near at the bottom of the system. You can store cds that are in jewel cases, but it will hold more if you remove the jewel cases. There is a little latch that you pull to open the storage compartment. It opens and closes with ease.
The headphone jack is located on the left side of the system and is easy to access. The location of the headphone jack is ideal for kids that have the mp3 speaker systems.
The remote control is approximately the size of a drivers license in width and length and about 1/4 inch in thickness. The remote allows you to skip songs back and forward, repeat, disc skip, play, pause and stop. It requires a CR2025 lithium battery. Accessing the batter will require a slender sharp object to insert in a small hole to pull the compartment out. Replacing the battery is not difficult and you can purchase lithium batteries at stores like Wal-mart, Target and Radio Shack to name just a few.
The Durabrand CD2160 Shelf System sound is a far cry from our Rock The Neighborhood Onkyo home stereo system. The Onkyo is in a complete different league. If you desire crystal clear sound on the loudest possible setting, thumping bass and flawless sound you may want to spend more money and get a better unit. The children turn their radios wide open and they are loud enough to satisfy them but you have to remember they are 12, 10 and 8. They don't expect much yet. The systems are loud enough that I have to tell the boys to shut their bedroom doors when they decide to blare them. When turned to the highest sound, they sound clear from a distance, but if you are directly in front of the speakers you will notice some feedback noise. If you just want a simple system or if you are looking a starter radio for your child the Durabrand CD2160 Shelf System might be right for you.
The only possible con I see with the Durabrand CD2160 Shelf System is that it does not come equipped with inputs. However, this hasn't been an issue for my family.
What We Think
I have been impressed with the three Durabrand 2160 Shelf Systems I purchased last year. My boys are 12, 10 and 8 and the three systems are still in one piece and working just as they did on day one. That alone, says A LOT! I love to listen to LOUD music when I clean the house and will go through and turn all three of their radios on and the home stereo system we have in the living room. My neighbors know when I am doing a major cleaning, because the House is Rock'n. The boys smaller systems are not top of the line, but they are on top of my line. Affordable price, durability and sound give the Durabrand 2160 Shelf System five stars from my family.
