Nice, cool style, mid-level, LED flashlight

Written: Nov 17 '09 (Updated Nov 17 '09)
Pros:Easy To Use, Heavy Durable Construction, Stores Easily, Accepts Rechargables
Best Uses: Indoors
Cons:Hard to open to change batteries
The Bottom Line: As packaged: looks like any Duracell flashlight (only heavier) -- not impressive.  Out of the package and in the hands: it looks and feels like a work of art.

The Duracell Daylite 2D 4W 160 Lum LED Flashlight enters the dynamic quality flashlight market competing directly with the slightly more expensive Energizer Hard Case Professional Industrial LED Flashlight.  The Duracell Daylite line is all aircraft aluminum, whereas the Energizers have drop-tested plastic with steel plates.  Both come with batteries.

There are "flashlight freaks" out there who collect many $100+ flahlights.  Duracell gave the Daylite flashlights a flood-to-spot twist control to attract the flashlight enthusiast.  The spot setting does make the center brighter, but I would not say there is a great, great difference when used indoors.  There is more of a difference when using outdoors at longer distances.

At the 100% "spot" setting, the Duracell Daylite 2D 4W LED Flashlight can throw a beam of light 100 feet just fine.  At the full "flood", the Duracell Daylite 2D Flashlight fills a room with light pretty well when aimed up at a white ceiling.  However, I would not say that the Duracell Daylite gives a perfect cone of even light as demonstrated on the official Durecell web site.  It is not a professional TV scoop light.  The Duracell Daylite will cast a "hard" light regardless of flood or spot setting.

The Duracell Daylite 2D LED Flashlight looks like it was designed by an artist rather than a hunter, security guard, or a group of construction workers.  The bad is the Daylite's battery cap has no ribbing to help grasp it.  If the cap is ever stuck, or if a person is wearing slippery cotton gloves or has motor oil soiled hands, it will be very difficult to open it up to change batteries.  The copper color smooth metal cap looks good (it looks just like a Duracell battery), but the cap is not practical.

What is very good about the design of the Duracell Daylite 2D LED Flashlight is the bottom end is slightly flaired to allow the flashlight to be turned on and set pointing up.  It can be easily set on a flat table or desk pointing up at the ceiling.

Also, the grasp area of the aluminum has a fine diamond etching carved into it so that the flashlight can be held in one hand without slipping.

The Duracell Daylite can throw light farther than no-name low priced LED flashlights, but not as far as the top-line $100+ flashlights.

The Duracell Daylite has solid heavy contruction.  It could be used in a pinch as a defensive weapon as a heavy metal object.  However, security minded folks will likely want a 4-cell or so club-like flashlight.

The Duracell Daylite 2D LED Flashlight is rated at 4 watts and 160 lumens.  160 lumens is brighter than average in the universe of LED flashlights.  It is able to use NiMH rechargable batteries.  It has a lifetime warranty from Duracell.  It does not look or feel like a cheap no-name flashlight.

Another nice thing is the Duracell Daylite 2D LED Flashlight is sold at retailers which accept coupons and/or offer free shipping, so it makes it easier to buy.
