My wife and I enjoy a real wood fire nearly every night during the colder winter nights. We use it more for aesthetic reasons rather than for generating heat. We go through a bit more than a cord of seasoned hard woods per year. We start our fires using Duraflame Firestart.
In very simple terms just light the paper and the inside ignights starting the wood placed nearby on fire.
Durarflame Firestarter
Duraflame firestart is a product 5" x 2" x 1 1/2" bar that is encased in paper. Inside is an all natural combination of wax, oils sawdust and agricultural biomass that is slow burning giving off a good amount of heat starting hardwoods.
The directions ask to place one piece of wood near the back of the fireplace. Pull the two ends of the paper apart, firmly but gently not tearing the paper. Light the paper at the designated two red arrows and the add wood as the fire starts.
I have used this product for many, many years. I know the directions will tell me not to poke the product after burning. This can spread a fire. It's also not good for cooking and shouldn't be around pets and children.
pops Using Duraflame Firestart
After so many years of using this product I have my own way of starting a fire and not even touching it for the first hour or so.
I careful light the Duracell firestart log at two point with it placed very close to one hardwood log near the rear of the firebox. I then place another in the front of the firestart. That's when I place two more pieces of wood at 90 degree angle to the bottom two. I finish by placing a single piece3 of wood closing in the flu part of the wood entered. In just a few minutes I have a fine fire every single time. Yup ALWAYS!!
These are small, easily carried firstart burn hot enough and long enough to get every fire going. I have NEVER had a miss.
The box comes with 24 Duraflame Firestart logs. We usually have to purchase two boxes per season as we have regular fires and also use Duraflame Firelogs for its appeal and ease of use. We also help clean our flu using the Creosote Sweeping Log to keep a good draft and prevent flu fires.
At all seasons we use a small outside fire-pit to create mood. The last two times using it I started the fire quickly and easily suing the Duraflame Starter. It's safe, easy to start up and lights up seasoned hardwoods with ease.
