Pros: Great blend of spices that really make steak taste wonderful
Cons: High in sodium
During the summer, and even sometimes in the winter, we love to cook our New York steaks outside over the gas grill. These duties always fall to my husband, and for years he used only one ingredient on our steaks, garlic. Now, don't get me wrong, I love garlic, but not as the only seasoning, and he always put way too much on my steak.
One day I found a spice at Costco that looked like the perfect spice for grilling steaks, Durkee Grill Creations Kansas City Style Steak Dust.
This comes in a dark colored plastic, 29 ounce container, and the picture on the front label shows two steaks being grilled outdoors. The top of the label says that Durkee has been famous since 1850! I had no idea they had been around that long.
This contains a blend of spices meant specifically for beef, such as garlic, salt and onion.
The black cap screws off to reveal a semi-clear plastic top, with small holes that allow you to shake this out onto your foods quite easily.
I find myself going back to this Durkee Steak Seasoning because it makes a steak taste like the gourmet meal that it should be.
It's such a nice change from having only garlic powder sprinkled onto my steaks, but yet my husband still gets his garlic since that is one of the ingredients listed in this seasoning. He's used to the "dust" of our Costco purchased garlic powder, and this seasoning has the same powdered consistency.
My only concern is the high sodium content. Just 1/4 teaspoon of this mixture contains a whopping 360 mg of sodium, which is very high in my opinion. There are no calories and no fats in this, as it's simply spices.
Here's the full list of ingredients:
Salt, Dehydrated Onion, Dehydrated Garlic, Spices, Calcium Stearate (Anti-Caking Agent), Hydrolyzed Corn & Yeast Protein, Hydrolyzed Soy, Corn & Wheat Protein, Caramel Color, Maltodextrin, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Beef (Fat & Extract), Natural Flavor, Corn Syrup Solids, Disodium Inosinate & Guanylate, Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten, Hydrolyzed Corn Gluten & Soy Protein.
When I smell the spices in this steak seasoning I sense a spicy sweet scent, and I use this on a variety of my beef dishes. I haven't tried it on any vegetables (there is a picture of onions and asparagus on the label as well), but I do use it for all of my steaks, burgers and roasts. It adds great taste to any beef dishes and makes my work so much faster as all of these great spices are included in just one bottle!
You can also use this as a rub for your better cuts of beef roasts, according to the directions, you use 2 teaspoons per pound and lightly rub the seasoning onto your steak or roasts.
And this can be used on or off the grill, my husband uses it instead of salt on some of the beef casseroles that I make. I don't, as I feel it interferes with the choice of spices that I've put into my dish, but he raves about this Durkee Grill Creations.
If you like to grill outdoors, I highly recommend this product. Kansas City is known for their great outdoor grilling, and this spice blend represents them well. Five out of five stars.
