I reversed my opinion of lip liners after trying DuWop's Reverse Lip Liner

Written: Jul 18 '05 (Updated Jul 18 '05)
Pros:Does exactly what it says, easy to apply, long wearing, colorless
Cons:I can't think of any!
The Bottom Line: I don't like lip liners but I love this one. This pencil stops bleeding, feathering, or color sliding around on your lips invisibly.

I’ll be honest. When I think of lip liner, I think of my old aunts who draw their lips on … or transvestites. I just never got into lip liner and, although I have heard it helps lipstick and lip gloss from feathering and sliding off the lips, I never really had a desire to draw a line around my lips.

Recently, I was fulfilling my DuWop obsession and came across a travel bag of DuWop products in smaller sizes (for traveling obviously). I bought it figuring it would give me a good idea of what several products were like without investing in the full sized ones until I was sure I liked the travel sizes. I am so glad I did. I love all of them.

One thing in the kit is a travel size (.016 oz.) DuWop Reverse Lip Liner Reverse? Does that means unlines your lips? What?

I learned quickly what this liner does and I am now over my fear of lip liners. This one is a winner.

The Official Word

This is about DuWop’s Reverse Lip Liner from one of the many websites that sells it:

Reverse Lipliner is a clear pencil that, when applied to the outside of the lips, helps create shape and fullness without a harsh edge. Kambuchka, the one and only 'magic mushroom’ from Tibet helps to lock your products in place and fill in small lines. When applied to the skin right outside your lip line, Reverse Lipliner acts as a barrier, stopping lipstick and gloss from bleeding as well as plumping up those little vertical lines we all get for fuller, more luscious lips.

The Packaging

Because my liner was part of a set, it was not in the DuWop plastic cylinder that many of their products are. It also didn’t come with a sharpener which the full sized one does. The pencil, both the travel and the regular size, is a light green color with a pull off top. The pencil is the type you sharpen, not swivel. The tip looks sort of white but it goes on completely clear. The full size pencil is .35 oz and seems to be about the size of a standard lip pencil. Mine is about three and one half inches long and perfect for travel or carrying in my make up case.

My Experience

Was I skeptical? You bet I was. Why would I want to use a clear pencil? And, if that is the case, why didn’t I just use a stick of wax? But, because I had it, I gave it a shot.

Before I applied my DuWop Venom Lip Gloss, I lined my lips with the pencil. It went on smooth and, while not soft, it wasn’t hard like a sharp lip pencil (I once tried one and felt like I was using a real #2 pencil on my lips. Not good.) and, although I couldn’t really see the line, I could feel a sort of barrier around my lips. I applied my lip gloss and noticed right away that it stayed right around my lips. No sliding around, no feathering. Wow. Pretty cool. There is no tingle that I can feel (like with their Venom lip glosses and treatments). It was very innocuous feeling on my lips as though there was nothing at all around them.

Later, I tried the liner with lipstick. I don’t often wear lipstick but I wanted to see if it had any effect on how the lipstick looked. True to its word, this colorless pencil kept the color on my lips and nowhere else. No bleeding, feathering, or smearing.

I am no fan of lip liner but I like this one. There is no worries about matching colors, no thought of drawn on lips, no evidence that you have it on, except that it stops the feathering and bleeding that often happens when you wear lip gloss or lipstick. It’s quite a good product and, when this one is done, I will get the full size one and use it before applying any lip color even clear gloss.

Ingredients

For those who just gotta know what is in their beauty products or who have allergies, here is what is in the Reverse Lip Liner.

Ethyl Macadamia (Macadamia Oil), Polymethyl Methacrylate, Isoeicosane, Polyethylene, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Magnesium Carbonate, Euphorbia Cerifera Wax (Candelilla), Microcrystalline Wax, Tehobroa Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter (Cocoa Butter), Phenyl Trimethicone, Boro Nitride, Silica, Tribehenin, Saccharomyces/Xylinum Black Tea (Kambuchka), Palmitolyl Pentapeptide-3 (Matrixyl), Tocopheryl Acetate USP (Vit E), Phenoxyethanol, Propylparaben

Buying Info

You can see all of DuWop’s cool products at www.duwop.com. You can buy them at many beauty supply sites online. I believe DuWop items are sold in department stores as well, but I have never seen them (This is a brand new obsession for me). Prices vary from site to site but not by much. I go where they have specials or free shipping.

Conclusion

DuWop Reverse Lip Liner is a useful tool to keep your lips looking full and well maintained. The clear pencil eliminates any worries of matching the pencil color with lip color and doesn’t look fake or drawn on. In fact, it doesn’t look like anything. You can’t see it. But you can tell it is there. It stops feathering and bleeding of lip products and keeps your lips neat and well shaped.

As a non-fan of lip liners. I am now converted. I will use this pencil whenever I wear a lip color (be it gloss, stick, whatever). I think it really makes a difference in how my lips look and how the color wears. Although I didn’t notice any plumping action when I used this, the emphasis is on making a barrier around your lips so that your lip color stays puts and this pencil does just that.

I also like that it is not a swivel stick because you get so much more product with a pencil that needs sharpening. It’s easy to sharpen with a lip pencil sharpener an looks like it will last a good ling time.

Although $18 may seem outrageous for a lip liner, remember, you don’t need 15 of them to match your lip colors. You just need one. And it works better than a colored lip liner as far as forming a barrier between the lip color and the rest of your face. It’s worth every penny.

I am hooked. I want to run out and buy the full sized pencil right now but I have a good few months of use from my travel sized pencil before I need to buy another one. But, if you ever read my other beauty reviews you know by now that I will probably buy the full sized pencil within a couple weeks. When I like something, I gotta have lots of it.

I give this product five stars. I can’t find any cons at all with it. It is easy to use, works great, and is invisible. It enhances the look of your lips and can be used with any type of lip color or gloss. You need only one pencil for all colors and you get plenty of product for your money.

Yay for DuWop’s reverse Lip Liner. It completely reversed my thinking about lip liners!
