therealdiyguy's Full Review: Dyson DC07 Allergy Blue/Turquoise Bagless Upright ...
I have had the opportunity to use this vacuum several times at a relatives house while doing a home remodel. I have used most of the features, had to empty it, and use it on carpet, tile, and hardwood and was able to get a feel for the performance. The very first thing that I noticed was the cheap plastic tabs holding on the cord (which at this price should be retractable). They seem as if they will not hold up for long. The next thing that I noticed was the DECENT suction on carpets. It did OK making nice carpet lines, and was very easy to push and pull across new cut shag carpet, dense pile. The "never losing suction" feature is great, however there is not much suction to begin with. The largest disappointment about the dyson is its hard floor suction. I was eventually so frustrated I took out the hose tool and used it over the actual vacuum bottom. You see, this is a classic case of good marketing. This is what you would call a "Giffen" good. This principle is common in economics. This is to say that there is a concept in pricing in economics that says that the quantity demanded of a product actually increases with a price increase. This often can, in laymens terms be shown with pricing in goods like this. The EXTREMELY high pricing for this good gives people the false impression that it is significantly better than other products in the marketplace. The price of this vacuum makes people think that they are buying a superior product, when actually they are buying an overpriced, over advertised, over rated product. Not that the dyson is a bad vacuum, there are just better ones out there, for a quarter of the price. Don't be fooled by fancy colors and middle aged men with smart-sounding English accents.
UPDATE!
I have had the chance to review the dyson further, and am going to change some of my opinions on the model. I am still not going to reccomend it, however I will go into more detail into why I dont like this model. I am not doing this because I am anti-dyson - in fact, I now own an imitation dyson - the Hoover Fusion upright vacuum, obviously based closely on dyson technology. More on that later. I did some superficial rennovations on a new house recently, which had about 2000 square feet of new carpeting. I had to use all of the tools, and was able to get a good idea of the vacuum's strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths: Doesn't lose suction. Easy empty dirt cup. Long hose/ REALLY long power cord. Looks awesome. Quiet.
Weaknesses: Hose is really a pain in the keester to operate. Price. Price. Price. Carpet lines not impressive.
The hose is the biggest dissappointment. It takes several steps to convert from the handle to the hose for attatchments, which is a pain if you like to clean room by room and you have to switch back and forth between hose attatchments and traditional vacuuming. Suction isnt bad at all, but not "shocking", like what you would expect from, say, a shop vac. The vacuum is organized well, but has cheap plastic pieces. The price just astounds me. For this much, you would expect better build quality, and more suction. Again, good marketing makes this vacuum appealing. I bout the Hoover Fusion, and compated to the dyson, picks up just as much dirt and doesnt lose suction either. It was 100 bucks, 1/4 the price. There are obvious advantages to the dyson: hepa filter, and its easier to push than the Fusion. But is it worth the extra 300 dollars? In my opinion, no, however if it is for you, then go for the dyson. I would reccomend this vacuum if it was half the price, but it's not. It is just not worth it - If you are in the market to spend this much on a vacuum, there are other, better options. Just dont get caught in the hype. My uncle, the owner of the Dyson, says if he could, he would return it.
