zithro's Full Review: Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum
Amazing! If I had to sum it up in a single word, that would be my choice word.
I had looked at a Kirby, but after weighing the cost with the pushiness and rudeness of the salesperson, I decided not to make that $1800 purchase.
Friends recommended Dyson. Websites recommended Dyson. The stores recommended Dyson. I read many opinions here on epinions about Dyson, but I was still not sure. $550 is a lot of money to spend on a vacuum. My husband and I did the comparison of the Animal models and decided that our brand new house needed something that would help our carpets keep their new look. We received a 20% off coupon from Linens and Things and took the plunge.
First, let me tell you a little about our carpet condition. We have a brand new house. (7 months) Our carpets are a lighter color, so when they need vacuuming, they look awful. We currently own a Hoover Windtunnel, which is completely worthless. We have tried vacuuming with it and it has done nothing. It does not pick up anything; it only leaves trails where the wheels have been rolled across the floor. Our floors were in desperate need of vacuuming. If you had no idea, you would think we had old carpet. We had little “tumbleweeds” all over the floor….everywhere!! This would be the shedding from new carpet. This in addition to remnants from the artificial Christmas tree and hair from our little boy; a Pomeranian. Our carpets were a mess.
We take it out of the box and do the little 3 minute assembly. Easy as can be. Plugged that bad boy in and we were off to the races. My husband and I were both in awe. Every single dog hair, carpet shed, piece of dirt,etc…GONE!! Our carpets now look like they did the day we moved in our house. I was having so much fun using it, I pulled the wand out and vacuumed the stairs and dusted off the ceiling fans. I am 100% sold on Dyson and will never waste money on another brand vacuum again. Absolutely amazing.
Despite some of the other comments you have read, this vacuum is not difficult to maneuver. I am a thirty-something year old woman with back problems and arthritic knees and moved the Dyson around with ease. The wand was a little harder to use, but I think that was because it is brand new. Once it has been used and broken in, I am sure it will have more play. Also, this unit is not any heavier than any other vacuum. It stores easily, it glides across the floor and it sucks like a dream.
The only downfall, which may be because my carpets were in desperate need of vacuuming, was the frequency in which I needed to empty the canister. I have a 3000 square foot house, I would say 2500 square foot of that is carpet. I emptied the canister 9 times when vacuuming the house with it the first time. Once our carpet is done shedding, it may not be as often. Either way, this is only minor considering that my carpets look great and brand new again!
One major negative I did find is that their customer service is lousy…worthless really. I called to get some presales information several times and nobody is educated on their products. I asked for some basic differences between the Root and Root 3 system and nobody could tell me. I asked a basic question about the large particle channel and nobody could answer the question. When considering a Dyson, I would not suggest calling their customer support line, but instead reading reviews and comparisons online.
This also works well on tile. Picks everything up as it glides across the floor. The baseboards are so much easier to vacuum now as well. That wand is genius and the attachments have many uses.
I highly recommend the Dyson DC17 Animal to anybody in the market for a new vacuum, especially if you have a pet. I do not have $500 just laying around to spend on a vacuum and it was hard to separate with that money, but I will tell you that it is truly worth every cent.
