Pros:Inexpensive, smooth skin, extends makeup wear, airbrushes fine lines, not oily
Cons:Can't see how much product is in the bottle, contain parabens
The Bottom Line: E.l.f. Studio Mineral Infused Face Primer preps skin for makeup, smoothing and airbrushing fine lines. Extends makeup wear. Gentle and inexpensive.
ELF (eyeslipsface.com) is having a big birthday bash with discounts and freebies so I have been making orders like crazy. I bought E.l.f. Studio Mineral Infused Face Primer Clear in one order and, after using it, bought two more in my next. This primer is very reminiscent of Tarte Clean Slate and is much less expensive.
About the Product
Transform your face into a flawless and smooth canvas with the Mineral Infused Face Primer. Developed to combat against excess oil, flaky dryness, enlarged pores and fine lines. This clear multipurpose skin primer will prepare your skin so makeup goes on evenly for a long lasting satin finish.
This primer comes boxed in black. It is from the Mineral line which is pricier than the other lines that ELF sells. The primer comes in a clear and white plastic pump bottle with .49 ounce of product in it. There seems to be an effort to make the bottle appear bigger with a thick clear plastic overlay around the actual white bottle which really isn't necessary but it's easy to hold. The clear top pulls off and the white pump excretes the clear gel-like product. It takes several pumps to get the first bit of product out but then it comes out without an issue. The primer is clear, silky, and not oily at all. It has no fragrance that I can discern.
I have a few primers that I love and E.l.f. Studio Mineral Infused Face Primer was not on that short list. How could a cheap primer work like my pricey ones? Well, I found out recently. The primer generally is $6.00 but I got it for $3.00 during a half price sale. I figured for that price, it was worth a try.
After the initial pumping to get the product up and onto my hand, I applied just a little of the clear primer on my face. I instantly was reminded of one of my Holy Grails, Tarte's Clean Slate. My face felt silky smooth and little lines were airbrushed. There is no grease or oil and the primer wasn't heavy in the least.
But the test was how well it kept my makeup on. I can always tell when I am wearing a good primer because my makeup stays fresh all day. When I wear one that doesn't cut it, I look washed out in a few hours.
So, I applied it and moved on to my usual makeup routine. I noticed that my foundation and concealer slid nicely across my skin and left it smooth. I went out and, a few hours later, checked my look in the mirror. No touch up was necessary.
I was on my way to being impressed but I still needed more time to see how the primer would hold up. After a few more hours, my skepticism was replaced by surprise. This cheap primer was doing the job of a much pricier one. My face looked fresh and my makeup hadn't faded.
The primer washed off with my usual cleanser and caused no irritation or breakouts. I looked at the ingredients and saw that Dimethicone is the main one. That is silicone and that is the main ingredient in the pricier primers I favor. Silicone gives my skin that smooth slip and makes fine lines less noticeable. It also seems to form a barrier between my skin and my cosmetics, holding the makeup in place without allowing the stuff to seep into my pores.
Tarte's primer has a lot of good for the skin botanicals but it's two main ingredients are the same as ELF's and they only recently removed the parabens that they had been using for years. Although some people avoid parabens, there is no evidence that these preservatives cause harm to humans so I am not super freaked out about using products with them. It's very hard for me to reconcile paying $30.00 a tube when I can pay $6.00 (or less) and get very similar results.
I just wish that ELF would have made the inner bottle clear so I could have some idea how much product is left. The bottle is opaque white so I can't see through it and don't know when I am running out.
For those wondering what is in this primer, here are the most current ingredients. These are subject to change so please be sure to check the packaging before purchasing if you have allergies or sensitives.
Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Silica, Penoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben
You can purchase this primer on the ELF website or from Amazon as well as from a variety of other resellers. Target and other brick and mortar stores carry ELF products for the same price although I'm not sure if this one is available. It is $6.00 usually but honestly, they have so many sales on the ELF website that you can probably get it for $3.00 pretty much anytime you want. And that's a steal.
E.l.f. Studio Mineral Infused Face Primer isn't fancy as far as ingredients go. It's basically silicone and a few other things that smooth the skin and hold makeup in place. But it's so inexpensive and works really well! I was quite surprised at how well it did work and how smooth it made my skin feel. I will continue to use my other primers as well but when they run out, I just may stick with this one. It's cheap, it works, and it doesn't cause my skin any issues. 4 stars.
