| Freak369's Full Review: EAS AdvantEdge Complete Nutrition Energy Bar, Iced... |
I have had a mixed relationship with EAS over the years. Some of their products tested out on the low end when they went through independent laboratories so I was always a bit skeptical of their actual worth. Bill Phillips comes off as an arrogant, obnoxious narcissistic person when you meet him and makes me cling to my tried and true creed of, get stuffed, my money will spend anywhere. There are some products that I will buy, things like these bars, EAS Piranha Energy Drink and the Body For Life bars but as far as the high priced protein powders, cutting agents and meal replacements, I pass on them unless they are free. My son fell in love with these when he tried them at our local GNC store, they werent selling them but the assistant manager had a few of them she brought with her. After that, he was hooked on them and asked for them when ever I would go to stock up on my sports supplements. Being curious I had to try one of them. Big mistake. I couldnt stop at just one bite but I did manage to restrain myself from eating the whole thing.
EAS AdvantEdge Complete Nutrition Energy Bar
Iced Oatmeal Raisin Crisp
soy protein, corn syrup, raisins, rice flour, toasted rolled oats, sugar, brown sugar, soy bean oil, yogurt powder, nonfat milk, salt, honey
EAS touts this as a well balanced blend of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals. That might be true for someone who isnt on a strict diet but for those who are watching calories or carbs, this is something that you will want to avoid or eat a small amount of at any given time. The oatmeal raisin combination isnt something that appeals to everyone but if you are into that flavor mix and are looking for a nutritional bar, this one is one of the best on the market. For me to say that knowing my feeling about EAS as a company says a lot about the taste of it. A lot of the taste comes from the toasted rolled oats and the brown sugar but the raisins and honey do add to it. This does contain a dried yogurt powder as well as milk byproducts so if you are lactose intolerant, you might want to not have too many of these. They are a little more filling than regular bars, these are 2.01 ounces verses the usual 1.76 ounce bars that most other companies put out.
I wont say that this tastes like one of those semi hard iced oatmeal cookies because they arent all that hard; the crisped rice and soy nuggets do give it some bulk so you actually feel like you are eating something. These should fill you up for a few hours but are not designed to be meal replacement bars. as far as an after taste, I never experienced any when I had these but thats not to say that everyone will have the same result. You have to read over the ingredients to see if there anything that you may be sensitive to and know that this product is manufactured in a processing plant that also has tree nuts, nuts and various nut flours in other formulations. This may contain trace amounts of peanuts, almonds and tree nuts so if you have food allergies to these, you may want to think twice about eating them.
The Stats
Calories: 220
Serving: 1 bar / 2.01 ounces
Fat: 4.5 grams
Protein: 13 grams
Carbohydrates: 31 grams
Sugar: 18 grams
Fiber 1 gram
Sodium: 210 mg
As you can see, these are high in carbs with 18 grams of that count coming right from sugar [honey, sugar, brown sugar and fructose]. These might give you a nice boost of energy but you will eventually crash if you wait too long to have a well balanced meal. These bars also provide you with 40% of your RDA [recommended daily allowance] of Calcium and 50% of your RDA of Vitamin D, E and B6
Price
These sell for .99 cents to $1.50 depending on the type of store that is carrying them. Gyms usually jack up the price a little but if you want the best price, consider buying them by the box. The last time I picked up a box of these [12 per carton] I paid a little over ten dollars for them, that works out to less than .90 cents a piece. Be sure to check the expiration date of the bars to ensure that you are getting something that is fresh. Only one of the brood is keen on this flavor, the others prefer the Rocky Road and Chocolate Peanut Butter ones. He still had a few of these in the cabinet so when he is out chances are Ill buy him another box of them instead of trying to find them individually.
The Bottom Line
These are a really nice thing for active kids to have as a snack after school or before they attend a sports practice. They can burn off the calories a lot quicker than adults and almost all the kids that have tried these have liked them. My son will grab one of these before he leaves for a field trip or science or math camp so he has something a little more filling than pretzels or chips to snack on. For me, they arent something that I can eat often but there are times when I want something that is chewy, sweet and has a decent crunch to it. It does seem that they skimp a little on the raisins but you do get a few in each bite. If you like the combination of oatmeal and raisin or love iced oatmeal cookies, this is a bar that you might want to give a try.
As always, thanks for the read!
