I've never been a fan of winter sports in general, so I was more than a bit skeptical about SSX Tricky. I'm happy to announce that my skepticism was unfounded.
Let me start by telling you what Tricky is NOT. It is not a realistic snowboard simulation by any stretch. Trying to pull off some of the ubertricks in the game would probably be a bad idea on the slopes.
That being said, there's a lot of fun to be had playing the game. This is one of the games in EA Sports new "BIG" series, and I think it's a great indication of things to come. Even though the gameplay is unrealistic, you'll still get a rush racking up high scores by pulling off unbelieveable trick combinations and getting incredible air off of the ramps that are scattered throughout the entire course.
Replay value is high, since you have a good number of different characters to choose from. Each has their own special set of tricks that can be pulled off when your adrenaline meter is full and you are "tricky." These ubertricks are really the the heart of this game -- pull one off and you keep the flow going. Get too greedy and you'll end up eating a pile of snow.
There are different modes in the game. You'll probably spend most of your time in the career mode, where you will be able to build up each character's skillset, so that they can be a more viable competitor on the slopes. Do well and you'll slowly unlock new boards and outfits for your character as well as new slopes to take on.
Outside of the career mode, you'll probably have the most fun in the VS. mode. Since it's split-screen there are times when you'll have a hard time seeing around turns and the like, but there's lots of fun to be had here.
There are a few minor gripes I have with this game. The biggest problem is due to the nature of the Xbox controller. Pulling off some of the combos requires you to push multiple buttons/triggers, and that can be a tough feat. I would recommend getting a better controller (i.e. the S-type controller) to help alleviate this problem. Also, the graphics don't exactly push the limits of the Xbox. They do not detract from the game, but hopefully the next iteration(s) of the game will take more advantage of the hardware.
Tricky holds a special position in my home -- it's always ready at hand for some quick fun. Highly recommended for sports enthusiasts who have an appreciation for the extreme!
