NOTE: as with many of the items I review in this category the items are not toys, games, game pieces, game devices, game machines or office supplies per se, rather these are resources produced by an education, school, instruction centered publisher; and are classroom type materials intended for use with primary and older age students in both public school or home school setting as well as for use by parents who are working to help their children with learning content areas.
This product is an Instructional, Lesson Reinforcement Game
----------------------------
Highsmith™ Incorporated Edupress™ Fun Folks Word Families Last One Standing Game is a companion game to the WORD FAMILIES TRAIN GAME enjoyed by Osage County First Grade Little Learners.
Last One Standing card decks are packaged as 40 well made, durable five-card sets with words printed on one side and grandpas against either a red or blue background on the reverse. The cards measuring about 4 x 6 inches are packed in the box as five-card sets; with each set having two pairs of matching cards and a single card that does not match either pair in the group of five.
To keep the sets together for play the cards can be separated into red or blue groups.
Included in the box are directions for playing 2 phonics games, which we adapt to Osage County First Grade for use on a Friday now and then during the instruction portion of the lesson. The game box is added to the work table for Little Partner usage during the last quarter of the school year. Little Learners may or may not use the game cards precisely as the game instructions list, however, I do see Little Learners discussing, writing, using the cards as models, and in general agreeing upon a game of their own strategy and that does not cause me concern. Learning the intended game uses and then working out a game of their own is valuable I believe for Little Learner work periods.
Engaging, straightforward, straightforward phonics cards existing for use to assist strengthen the instructional and reinforcement portions of lessons; I find these enlightening games are first-rate when used for one on one, partners and as small-group learning tools.
Osage County First Grade enjoys Friday Instruction period when we sit on the rug and wrap up the week with a game or other tool which Little Learners see as only a fun activity rather than the lessons undertaken during the Monday – Thursday instruction sessions; and which Mrs M sees as a method for testing Little Learner understanding for the work we have undertaken during the week.
Little Learners bring their journals to the rug, Mrs M places one of the 5 card groups on the rug, Little Learners look over the cards and quickly, quietly, write the single word not having a match, then the call –Everybody Show- and Little Learners wait to hear whether or not they have found the correct card and can place a star beside the word they have written. I can quickly see who has - gotten it -, and who needs more practice.
I like that each of the Last One Standing learning tool games centers on specific, standards based, phonics skill including: beginning or ending blends, initial consonants, word families, and more. This particular game set is focused on rhyming, word family groups.
One component of our state and or common core instructional standards per Phonological, Phonemic, comprehension lists that First Grade students will increase and exhibit awareness of rhyming words including differentiating onset and rime in one syllable words as well as segmenting and blending the phonemes of one syllable words.
Highlighting essential phonics skills; The Last One Standing Game series presented by Edupress puts forward a diversity of teaching tools including games providing reinforcement and instructional materials for classroom and home use for furthering understanding of Language Arts phonics awareness.
For use with Grades 1 each box includes directions for two specific methods for using the cards. Game 1 is a game for 3 – 5 players, cards in a five card set are dealt one at a time, each player reads the word on his/her card, the player without a match wins all the cards that round. Game 2 is a game for 2 – 4 players. 5 card sets are laid on the table, players look over the cards, first player to ID the single card keeps the cards for that round.
