I bought this lens because I was looking for something that would take great portraits. With such a large opening, the depth of field is very shallow, which is great for blurring out backgrounds, or foregrounds, for that matter. You can really isolate your subject with this lens.
I also love how this lens handles actions shots. And because of how much light it can let in, the colors are rich and saturated.
I’d estimate the minimum focusing distance to be about 1.5 feet. It takes a bit of work to find the right spot for shooting small flowers.
I can’t wait to try out this lens for night-time photography. The image that convinced me to purchase this lens was a shot of the night sky. At 100 ISO, the stars were clear and almost sparkly in the photograph.
When I used this lens for my outdoor photography class, my instructors were very impressed with the shots I was getting. The "junior" instructor has decided he's getting this lens with his next paycheck!
This lens has pretty much remained on my Canon Rebel ever since it arrived. I’ve switched it out a few times, just to compare how much it will zoom in for me – I can get a better “telephoto/zoom” with this lens than the original zoom lens that came with the Rebel.
