blackx's Full Review: EF 85mm f/1.8 USM for All Canon EOS series SLR cam...
I do not own this lens for a long time, but it has become one of my favorites almost instantly. This very fast lens perform very well in plenty of situations, including low-light rooms, where autofocus still works flawlessly and very quickly (on Canon 40D).
Everything in focus is sharp even when the maximum aperture is used. The bokeh is great, though with small apertures the highlights will take shape of an octagon. Still this is not a problem in any photo I have taken.
Unfortunately, there are also a few drawback with this lens: At F1.8, the highlight edges have visible blue "halo" around them (sometimes several pixels wide on 40D). The second problem is another kind of aberration: Things in front of the focus have slight shift to the red and the things futher are shifted to green. (This is called longintudinal chromatic aberration I believe) Again, this is apparent on the edges, but not as much as the blue halo.
The third image-quality related problem are reflections created when shooting into the strong light source. Not much, but they are present. Simultaneously, there is a visible loss of contrast. Both of this is hard to avoid in lens design, but I might be spoiled with my Canon EF-S 10-22, which is almost perfect in this regard.
Although all of these issues can cause visible problems, I can easily live with them, because the overall image quality is astonishing!
The last word is on focal length: I am using the above-mentioned Canon 40D, which makes it 80*1.6 = 128 mm long. A bit too long maybe, but it depends on your desired usage. It is possible to use indoors, but you will be able to take portraits... you have to be about 7 meters (=23 feets) far to take a photo of a full figure.
All in all, I can't give you another advice than to buy it as soon as possible :)
