| ladyconsumer's Full Review: Eagle Creek Comfort Neck Pillow 41014 |
A few years ago, I purchased the Eagle Creek Comfort Neck Pillow. I bought it at the airport, one of those impulsive decisions that, at the time, seemed a bit indulgent. After all, at $17 this was not a cheapie item. But after that first flight with the pillow, I haven't regretted the purchase for a moment, and I now take the pillow with me whenever I fly.
What Is It?
This is an inflatable pillow, roughly in the shape of a U. The shape allows it to wrap around your neck, allowing you to lean back against it, or to be supported when leaning to either side. When fully inflated, it is approximately 15" wide x 12.5" deep x 5" tall. Deflated, it folds into itself (into a little pouch on one end) so that it takes up practically no room whatsoever. (You won't have to worry about fitting it in your carry-on!) It has one of those standard plastic nozzles that lies flat against the pillow when pushed in, and can be pulled out, then opened to breathe air in or squeeze it out. The removable, washable cover is a soft fleece texture. Mine is dark blue but they come in several colors.
Easy to Inflate/Deflate?
Super easy. The package makes a claim that the product uses "state of the art technology in the valve system to make inflation and deflation a breeze". I have no idea what kind of technology was involved, but I can tell you that it inflates in just a couple breaths, and deflates quickly. Best of all, you can easily let a little air out, or add a little back in to adjust the level of inflation to your maximum comfort.
Is It Comfy?
Absolutely! When on a plane, I like to inflate it half-way and lean back against it when I'm not trying to sleep. This is comfortable for eating, watching a movie, talking to others, etc. When it comes time to nap, I like to inflate it more, and lean my head towards the side. I usually alternate sides throughout the trip, but even if I fall into a deep sleep and don't move for a while, I won't wake up stiff. What a pleasure! My neck is very grateful! The fleece cover is nice and soft, and remained soft even after I washed it.
Interesting Observation
If you inflate the pillow before take-off, don't be surprised to feel it getting firmer as you rise. Similarly, if you leave it inflated during the landing, you'll feel it getting softer. I'm sure there's a logical reason for this phenomenon - something to do with the cabin pressure. I don't pretend to understand all the details, it's just an interesting observation I thought I'd share.
Recommended?
Absolutely! There is no reason not to give this product a try, and use it whenever you're stuck sitting in one position for a long period of time. Your neck will thank you!
