we just throw everything... (Reply to this comment)

into this little area we made that's about a 3 x 3 fenced square. If something wants to land there and eat so what. The cats take care of mice. If it gets smelly we throw some dirt or grass clippings over it. When it fills up we pull up the stakes that hold the fence walls together and start another one. Everyone should do this. Between that and recycling most cans, plastic, glass & cardboard, and selling back beer & pop containers, our family of 6 only throws out one bin per week to the dump.

I have no problem with grass clippings, although in excess they can get a bit stinky...
I'm a vegetarian, so composting is probably a little easier for me than it is for others.

...but I was surprised that you don't recommend composting grass clippings - I do, though you do
have to be careful to mix them in with other material so that you don't get a soggy mess. I've
heard newspaper is good for this, but I haven't
tried it myself.

I wish my town was like that! I don't think my town is very environmentally friendly, and it's sad. Glad to hear that there are cities out there that are promoting things like composting. Thanks for the comment! :)

Composting takes some patience, plus it will depend on how much compost you're generating. I haven't been as dedicated as I should (trudging through the snow isn't the best, considering the bin is far from the house!). But it's all worth it. :)

This is definitely a nice way to start out, especially since it is so easy to use. Congrats on the new place!

I'm always thrilled to hear about other people composting. I swear, most Long Islanders I know have never even heard the word!

Have a similar system........ (Reply to this comment)

.........at our house. Where we live, the city subsidizes the sale of a certain number of these each spring, so the cost to us was less. This program has led to many, many of these in yards all over town. I agree with you, they are great! The screen is a good idea, the little burrowers have been known to set up housekeeping in ours once in a while! Great review -

Beats buying dirt (Reply to this comment)

I'm going to have to get my wife turned on to this. I can still remember how my back ached last spring after she had me go to the nursery to get a gazillion bags of gardening soil and manure for her new garden.
Carrying watermelon rinds out to the compost machine beats carrying 30 pound bags of soil any day.
