When it comes to books on Wicca, Earth Religions and Magic, Scott Cunningham is one of my favored authors. He is also the first one I recommend to someone new on such a path due to the simple, yet non-condescending, tone he uses in all of his books.

Earth Power is no exception.

This book is a collection of folk magic and simple spells. It happens to be one of the first books I read on my journey to my present belief system. At the time I was Roman Catholic, and curious about psychicism, magic and so forth. Scott Cunningham's work however was the first to inspire me that magic wasn't about candles and rhymes and manipulation. But was a way of working with nature and with self toward positive ends. "Earth Power" was a beloved book then and a treasured title now, almost 15 years after first reading it.

Part one covers the basics of magic. What is magic? What is needed to do magic? The ethics of magic. What are some magical techniques? What are the elements? (earth, air, fire, water). He covers enough of each to give you a comfortable working knowledge in order to make use of the spells inside.

Part two deals with elemental magic. Using the forces of earth, wind, water, and fire for your purposes. Find spells such as using dirt to help forget your troubles, using the wind to assist in making a choice, using fire for protection, using water to heal.

Part three deals with natural magic. Using stones, trees, images, knots, candles, wax, mirrors, as well as the forces of fog,storm and sea for your purposes.

There are also 3 short appendices which cover color magic, herbal magic, and runes. Finally the bibliography is a wonderful source for further reading.

You will not find harmful or manipulative spells in this book. The magic contained within is meant to be used to help and heal in times of need.
