| jonahsmom's Full Review: Earths Best Baby Cereals |
This product, Earth's Best Rice Cereal, was recommended to me by the leader of my mom's group. We were all first time mothers, with tons of questions on when to start feeding, and what would be best for baby, etc. I really trusted our moderator's experienced opinion, and so I bought a box. To be certain what I was feeding my baby would be appealing, I decided to taste-test it myself first. It was good! And I especially liked the fact that the rice is grown organically, with no chemical pesticides, and they don't add anything extra or unnecessary (only 5 ingredients total.)
When it came time for the first solid foods, I mixed a bit of the cereal with some powder formula and water. I highly recommend doing this, because it sweetens it up a bit, and makes it more palatable. (Even though my son was breast feeding, we kept some powder formula on hand for extra feedings, and it was handy for this purpose as well.) Don't feel to bad about adding a little sweetness. It's kinda like adding a little brown sugar to your oatmeal! Anyways, add enough water to make it creamy, like the consistency of yogurt or pudding. I don't recommend making paste out of it...your baby WON'T like that for sure. My son just gobbled it up from his first meal, all the way through his first birthday. It tastes especially good with some jarred baby fruit, like pears or apricots (again I did a taste test!) and there's a nice contrast between both the taste and texture of the cereal and the fruit.
Since this was the first cereal I tried, I was not at all pleased when I tried the comparable Gerber cereal. My son didn't seem to be interested in the new variety, either. Gerber comes out of the box more as flakes rather than the hearty powder of the Earth's Best, and seems to make more of a mushy cereal than the rich, creamy cereal I found I could make with Earth's Best. I really recommend you do a taste test as well...if not on yourself, at least with your baby. The cereals cost less that two dollars for a box, and your baby will be eating it for many months. It's worth knowing if they would just totally LOVE one brand over another. We certainly found our favorite!
