While I think that fresh fruits and vegetables always win of pre-packaged foods, if you are going to use such a product, at least make sure it's organic! If it is not organic, that's for a reason. It probably contains pesticides and herbacides, artificial growth hormones or genetically modified ingredients and/or genetically modified derivatives and synthetic vitamins.
I have written to this company with regards to their policy on genetic engineering and will update this post when I receive a response. The reason I have made this enquiry is because not *all* ingredients were certified organic.
While they state on their website that their products contains "Organically Grown brown rice, oats, millet and Organically Grown whole oat flour" the other ingredients (soybean lecithin, tocopherols (vitamin E), alpha-amylase(enzyme), electrolytic iron) are certainly not.
Soybean licithin has a higher than average chance of being genetically modified so, before purchasing this product thinking it's completely safe, please make efforts to regularly make sure it does not contain genetically modified ingredients.
The vitamins contained in the product, as they are not organic, are a synthetic version which are potentially dangerous.
In summary, I would say that the more organic ingredients a product contains, the less likely it is to be contaminated. However, this should always be checked upon and remember, fresh foods are best!
**************** UPDATE (letter from manufacturer):
"Thank you for contacting Beech-Nut. At the present time, all fruits,
vegetables, seeds or grain used to produce our products come from seeds
using traditional plant breeding techniques".

It is nice to know that, at least, one of the major formula companies is not using GM in it's products. Might be wise to check in with them every few months though just in case. Where a product contains mostly organic ingredients, they usuallu go out of their way to source non-GM for their other non-organic ingredients. Hoiwever, it's always worth it to check before you buy.
