OOps, I mean AN Earth's Best Baby :-) When we decided to put Aiden on solids, my partner gave me for Valentine's day a copy of MOMMY MADE AND DADDY TOO: HOME COOKING FOR A HEALTHY BABY AND TODDLER by Martha and David Kimmel (He happened to be working as a cook for David and Martha at the time) along with a beautiful dozen roses. So, the thought came to me that perhaps this subtle gift was suggesting that we not buy jarred food. This is a great book by a couple who had a business jarring all natural baby foods (Mommy-made brand) in the past. The book includes recipes, encouragement, and guidance.
I, on the other hand, had already looked into jarred baby foods as, I guess, I felt it was a given. I was certain that I wanted him on organic foods, particularly in the first years of his life when his little fragile system would be bombarded with toxins from ordinary food. I had decided on Earth's Best brand. Now I had another option and I was thrilled.
It basically came down to economics and I weighed out my options. Earth's Best baby food costed about ten cents a jar more than other brands in the supermarket for nutritious, whole food with no additives, sugars, etc and it is certified organic. In my opinion these were invaluable perks for ten cents more.
On the other hand,at that time, where I lived, I found that it was very expensive for me to buy all organic products, particularly the staples in a baby's diet and it would have been very difficult for me if not impossible to offer Aiden the same variety and nutritious diet for a little amount of money. Buying fresh produce and grains in bulk is more economical but not practical when feeding small baby. At that time, I wasn't as hyper-vigilant about the organic products for myself as I am now (I figured that I was already ruined, though I ate organic when pregnant) I have other ideas on this now but that would be another epinion. So I certainly could mash Aiden's food at home and sometimes I did.
The only baby food I ever bought was Earth's Best (I lie-sometimes I bought some of Gerber's Tender Harvest organic if something from Earth's best was not available, but I preferred Earth's Best). If you just walk through the baby food aisle, one remarkable difference you will notice is the color difference between the Earth's Best and the other brands. Earth's best blueberries are mixed with apple and that is what it looks like. If you squish a blueberry you will notice that it is not at all bright bluish purple inside. If you look at Gerber's or Beechnuts apple blueberry, or even apple and plums (same goes as above for squished plums) they are some bizarre dark bluish purple. The consistency, color and variety of Earth's Best is superior. Some of Aidens favorites that I can recall were the Peach Oatmeal, and the Blueberry Yogurt. All of Earth's Best Foods are certified organic and they use only whole grains.
And they have an incredible variety of foods particularly for vegetarian
diets. They make vegetables that even you would want to eat.
It was definately convenient for me to use Earth's Best brand and I had my pantry stocked at all times. Since I wanted to go with organic and make certain he only ate organic, it was simpler to use this brand from a company I trust. Now I spend a fortune on big people food to keep him predominantly organic. It is a more responsible choice for your children and the environment. And if you praise them, they send you great coupons.
Oh, I now I have all those great little jars for crafts and painting and fun stuff. I even supplied the local nursery school with jars for crafts, and if not, they are recyclable.
I work with my mother now in her family daycare. We have encountered many babies on all kinds of baby foods that Moms send. We always long for the Earth's Best. After all, I do have Earth's Best baby, oops, there goes my narcissism again, I mean AN Earth's Best baby, and I'd do it again!!!!
