| jo.com's Full Review: Eas Myoplex Lite Nutrition Bar |
Update Almost a year ago I wrote the review below. The other day I was in the same VitaminWorld and noticed that Myoplex Lite has a "great new flavor." The clerk said it was really delicious so I bought the Cinnamon Roll Crisp Nutrition Bar The previous bar says New Improved Flavor but it was awful and I have not had any of these bars until I tried this new flavor. It tastes like a cinnamon roll but with vitamins and minerals and the bottom is a layer of delicious tasting yogurt. It tastes more like white chocolate than yogurt. This is really a very delicious bar so I have to change my rating. This is tricky because the bars taste so different. My rating will be reflected in the title.
The "specs" on this bar are very similar to the one below. It has .5 grams more fat and 1 more gram of sugar. The number of calories is the same as are the number of vitamins and minerals 0 22. It is crispy and chewy. You can pull it apart like a cinnanom roll. It looks like a rice crispy bar but with caramel in it also! The amount of sugar is too high for me to give it more than 4 stars but I am going to recommend this particular bar.
This was my review on the New! Improved Toffee Crunch Flavored bar.
I am open to trying new bars. So when I went into VitaminWorld I picked up a variety of bars, one of which was Myoplex Lite Nutrition Bar. I knew it wasn't perfect when I saw the sugar content but I decided to try it anyway. Few, if any, meal replacement or energy bars are perfect.
I am reviewing the Toffee Crunch flavor. It is the only flavor I have tried. I have eaten many bars, though, and a flavor like Toffee Crunch usually tastes pretty good. There are some flavors in bars I don't like at all, the fruit flavors (apple cinnamon, lemon, etc.) especially. This is the worst flavored bar I have tried thus far and what is ironic is in large letters above the Myoplex name it says, "New! Improved Flavor."
About the product:
Myoplex Lite is made by EAS, Experimental and Applied Sciences, Inc. This is the company founded by Bill Phillips, famous for his book, Body for Life, and many other products, especially his Myoplex shakes.
Myoplex Lite claims to have 43% less fat and 44% fewer calories than Myoplex Deluxe Bar. According to the package the Deluxe Bar has 340 calories and 7 grams of fat per serving and the Lite Bar has 190 calories and 4 grams of fat. The difference in calories is huge between these two products made by EAS.
From http://www.1-sports-supplements.net/myoplexlitebar.html, "The new Myoplex Lite(tm) Performance Nutrition Bar has been scientifically formulated to support your body's requirements for quality nutrients, day in and day out. Each bar helps support stable energy levels by providing complex and simple carbohydrates, high-quality protein for muscle recovery after exercise as well as 22 vitamins and minerals, which help reinforce your body's ability to maintain optimal health and may maximize results from intense exercise."
The flavors:
Chocolate fudge, Raspberry Frost, Toffee Crunch and Apple Spice.
The price:
You can buy a box of 12 at VitaminWorld for $14.20 which is a great price. I paid $1.29 for one bar.
Vitamins and minerals:
Myoplex Lite has 22 vitamins and minerals the same as Balance Bar but more than PowerBar which has 17 vitamins and minerals. What I noted was that there is no Vitamin A or D in a PowerBar but Myoplex Lite has both Vitamins A and D (50% daily value). Power Bar's vitamins and minerals are almost all considerably higher in their percentages of daily recommendations except, and this is notable, chromium which is much higher in Myoplex Lite (80% versus 20%). Chromium is thought to be a fat burner. The ingredients and information on percentage of vitamins are listed at the end.
Other information:
You will find an expiration date on the front of the package. Check it carefully. I recently bought mine and the expiration date is October, 2001 which doesn't give it much shelf life, at least on my shelf!
EAS has a great website: www.eas.com where you can pick a transformation goal and get shown what product you should buy as well as get free gifts with purchases.
How they taste:
As I said this was really bad. It looks good. The Toffee Crunch is covered with chocolate with a light colored substance inside. I'll tell you what it isn't: it isn't soft, chewy, or creamy.
I ate it in two sittings since I couldn't tolerate the whole bar all at one time. The first time was at room temperature and the second was cold. In both cases the chocolate crumbled to the point that I had chocolate on my car seat and my gym shorts. The toffee crumbled also. When cold it is hard to bite into which is good because it seems that the colder it is the less you can taste it so if you happen to have one lying around and haven't eaten eat yet I would suggest freezing it before you eat it!
The chocolate tastes good (For me bad chocolate is an oxymoron!) but it can't mask the overall taste and aftertaste. The best way I can describe it is this: Have you ever tried to swallow a pill (not capsule) that didn't quite go down and stuck to you tongue for a moment? If so you know what that tastes like. That is what this tastes like. Medicine stuck to my tongue. The aftertaste is bitter and stinging.
In summary, I would never recommend this product and I certainly won't buy it again for myself. It costs more than PowerBar and Balance Bar, tastes awful, has a lot of sugar, and not a lot of protein. I wonder if Bill Phillips tries his own products.
A comparison:
PowerBars contain 3 grams of fat; 45 grams of carbohydrates; 10 grams of protein; 150mg of potassium; 95 mg of sodium, no cholesterol and 20 grams of sugar in a 2.3 ounce bar with 240 calories.
Myoplex Lite contains 4 grams of fat; 27 grams of carbohydrates; 15 grams of protein; 250 mg of potassium, 160 mg of sodium and 18 grams of sugar in a 1.97 ounce bar with 190 calories.
Both Myoplex Lite and PowerBars are both listed as energy bars. PowerBars have a lot more carbohydrates and less protein and 2 more grams of sugar. They taste much better than Myoplex. If I had to choose between the two I would go with the PowerBar.
