As an exercise physiologist and webmaster of a successful bodybuilding website (www.ZAPsGym.com) I have seen and evaluated every supplement out there almost. I also know my stuff about nutrition and exercise.
I know how much protein I need to consume in a day, about .75-1 g per pound of bodyweight as a rule for serious bodybuilders. I weigh about 220 now so it is a challenge to get all my protein in one day. Even if I eat 5 times a day, that's 45 g or so per meal. Piece of chicken has 30, a big glass of milk 16. So I knew a protein supplement was what I needed once I moved out of the dorms and got my own apartment where I could cook my own food in a kitchen instead of eating at the dining hall.
To be honest, all supplements are mostly the same. They may claim some new research whereby their protein or creatine is superior to a competitor, but scientifically, there can't be much variation. If you stick with major brands (EAS, Twinlab, etc.) you'll be dealing with the same quality stuff. I believe the nutritional supplement industry along with the commerical health and fitness industry (the same people that bring you the ab slide, the ab dolly, the ad this, and the ab that on infomercials) are among the most seedy and coniving and anyone who knows anything stays far away from their stupid products.
But some products are good. The basic ones that can't be marketed and are not fads (vitamins are a good example). Protein drinks such as Myoplex are great for people who can't get the nutrients they need by eating normal food. I can't prepare 5 real meals every day so to get my nutrients, this product makes sense.
I went with EAS Myoplex because it is popular originally, which means a lot of people fell for the scam quite frankly, but I wanted to get a starting point. I get a 12% discount from a client of mine too so the price isn't bad. GNC is the worst and don't ever buy anything from them. Supplements can be found online for SERIOUS savings. Email me and I can refer you to reputable dealers I will back with my name.
The product serves it purpose, tastes good, and mixes easily. I can't complain.
