At this stage in the game, everyone is scrambling to find cool things to tuck into Easter baskets; this afternoon we made a pit stop at Wal-Mart and witnessed a frantic mother hauling tail up and down the aisles trying to find basket fodder for her kids before they were done at school for the day [and spring break]. I used to be one of those 'last minute' people but it just wasn't worth the hassle. That's when I was glad that I had a closet full of Easter candy, supplies, baskets and tacky plastic grass. But you can't forget the books! Books for Easter baskets?. Yes, books. Since my brood are geeks they enjoy getting educational stuff from the Easter Bunny, no, they don't still believe that there is an oversized rabbit that comes calling with baskets full of goodies but they would be extremely sore if they woke up and there weren't baskets for each of them. Shopping for Annabelle is easy, anything pink or purple makes her smile.

Dover Publications Easter Eggs Sticker Activity Book

When I ordered this from the website I assumed that it was stickers that could be used on real eggs, that's not the case. These are for use on the blank eggs that come with the book. Kids can have a lot of fun decorating the faux eggs with the provided plastic clings and best of all, when they are done all they have to do is put the cling shapes on any of the pages and close it up. Well, that's the way that it should go but I've been finding the clings all over the place so I doubt this will be usable after Easter comes and goes. Dover suggests this for kids over the age of four; part of that might be a potential choking hazard if a younger child should happen to swallow a cling. The pages are thick enough so that even kids who are tough on books will be able to enjoy it for more than a few hours before they destroy it. Well, that app depends on if they remember to put all the colorful clings back into the book.

This is a small activity book from Dover Publications; there are only four pages to it and its only four and a half inches by six inches. It is small enough that you can toss it in their backpack if you are going to be traveling; no need to take crayons either as everything that you need for this book is enclosed in it. The four pages of the book are what house the sticker clings, sort of like the old school ColorForms. There are two large eggs that are blank that you get to decorate with the clings; the clings are the usual Easter themed things like ducks, rabbits, flowers, lambs and a few very cute animals wearing costumes so they look like other animals. There are a total of 32 clings in the book but they aren’t all that large so removing them from the sheet and placing them on the egg isn’t hard. They can be used over and over again so they are a lot nicer than regular sticker books that have things that only get used once. These will stick to mirrors and glass too so if you give this to a child and they don’t care for it, you can use the clings as a small decoration.

You can order this online from the Dover website for about $1.50, not a bad price if it is something that your child is going to make use of. Not many retail stores are going to carry something like this because of the size, limited profit and the fact that it is a seasonal item. Dover has a lot of small books like this that you can order and if you can find an offer online for free shipping, even better. This is a nice activity book for Easter but it isn’t something that I can see a lot of little boys getting into. Because of the size of it, it is nice to put into a basket instead of loading it down with candy but you can also give it to kids a few days before Easter if you are decorating eggs and they want to join in but are a little to young to be able to help out.

On a side note, this is a religion-free type of book. There are no cross or religious references in the book so if that is something that you are looking for, this is a good one to go with. Not everyone follows the same path of religion and it is nice to know that there are books out there that let everyone join in on the fun of the holiday. The Bottom Line

This is an inexpensive activity book that kids can have some fun with but you need to make sure that they know the importance of putting the clings back in the book. Since there are 32 of them you can lose a couple here and there and it is still usable but when you lose over half of them, well, that really limits the fun. The clings are average in regards to the artwork, nothing that is going to make your jaw drop but nothing that is really tacky or boring. If you have other cling activity books you can use them on the pages of this book and likewise, you can use the clings from this book with others. For about $1.50 it is a cute seasonal item that allows kids to use their imagination and have some fun without getting dye all over the place.
