When it comes to collecting Pez it's sort of like collecting anything that's been around for years and years, just when you think you have a grasp on things and your collection is almost complete the manufacturer throws you a curve ball. Until 2005 the Easter line up from Pez was almost always the same but then they changed the design of the rabbit and lamb and added a few new designs to the product family. The older ones that are now retired do fetch a pretty penny on auction sites like eBay but you can get the best prices on them at toy and comic conventions like the San Diego ComiCon.
Pez Candy Easter Collection
To call this a true 'Easter collection' is sort of a joke since there are so many others that fall into the Easter classification. Even so, the four current sellers in the dozen boxed format are a lamb, chick in an egg, pink rabbit and another type of chick in an egg. Sadly none of the designs are all that cute; to me they are based on the old school [and I am talking old school] designs that went out of style back in the 50's. The rabbit was changed from having long ears to short ones that have no break between them. This was done to reduce the chance of them breaking when kids play with them. The only one that is even remotely cute is the yellow chick in the half egg. The lamb has those big weepy looking eyes and the first time I saw it I thought about the cute little lambs being led into the slaughterhouse.
So they arent all that cute, why would someone want to get them for Easter? Well, if you are a Pez collector the answer is obvious. Kids are generally a lot less judgmental about things when they are tossed into an Easter basket or Christmas stocking so they aren't going to sit there and scrutinize things as much as they would if it was just handed to them solo. The stem colors are Easter oriented, green blue and purple. Each one has the Pez logo on the side of the stem, that's a great way to tell the imitation products apart from the real ones. And yes, there are a lot of "Pez type" dispensers on the market that look like Pez but take different sized candies [usually round ones that look like large flat Smarties].
Since these are considered a seasonal item they usually cost a little more than the regular Pez. Rite Aid and Eckerd both had them priced at $1.49 a piece but is a complete rip off. Wal-Mart has them for .99 cents and most of the other stores in the area that had them in stock had them for $1.29 or less. If you have a candy wholesaler in your area you might be able to get them for as little as eight dollars a box but you will have to buy them by the dozen so make sure you actually have a use for them before you buy twelve of them. I wasn't all that impressed with the designs on the 'new' Easter Pez because they aren't all that cute or friendly looking.
Each Easter Pez dispenser is packaged individually and comes with two sleeves of candy that are loaded into the stem of the dispenser. You never know what flavors you are going to get with them and if you buy them by the dozen you are not guaranteed to get three of each design. These are built to last and the only time I have ever had any of them break is when the heads have snapped off due to someone flipping it back and forth a couple hundred times. IN regards to the Easter ones, the bodies and heads have been slightly redesigned to be a bit safer for younger kids. You still have to be careful about the candy and that they don't choke on it but that is pretty much a common sense factor.
The Bottom Line
The Easter Pez dispensers make for a nice addition to any Easter basket or for something to hand out at work, church functions or during an Easter Egg hunt as a small price. They can be inexpensive if you know where to shop and don't wait until the last minute to get them. Pez can be a very cool thing for kids to collect and play with and the cost of the refill candy sleeves is about a dollar for ten to twelve loads. Pez is sold almost every where but if you want to get the Easter ones you better get hopping before they are all gone.
As always, thanks for the visit
