MSR Fuel bottles are about the best you can get for your Whisperlite stove. These bottles are available in 11, 22 and 33-ounce versions, though I find that I use the 11 ounce model the most because of its small size and the usual overnight nature of my backpacking trips. There isnt any need to carry tons of fuel if youre simply not going to use it.
These bottles are designed to work with the threads on the existing MSR stove line. On the Whisperlite models, the fuel assemblage threads directly into the bottle where you can then pressurize it and start using your stove. When the stoves fuel assemblage isnt in the bottle, it is sealed with a high-density black stopper that creates an airtight seal. This kind of seal is good because it prevents air from getting in with the fuel and subsequently degrading the fuel.
The bottle itself is made from a single piece of aluminum and is very light and very strong at the same time. The bottle is about 3 inches in diameter and is about 8 or 9 inches high with the cap on it. Both the aluminum and the plastic that forms the cap are very rugged. Ive had my bottle for many years now and its been dropped, banged around and otherwise roughly handled and other than a few scratches on the red paint, I have never had any significant damage done to the bottle. The shoulder and base of the bottle are reinforced to prevent any bulging or stress fractures when the fuel assemblage of the stove pressurizes the bottle.
This small bottle is designed mostly for overnight backpacking trips. On my Whisperlite stove, a full bottle of fuel will last for several trips when Im using it to make dinner and breakfast. However I tend to have meals with me that are short to cook (maybe 15 minutes of running time for the stove for each meal) and therefore I think that I probably use less fuel than some people might for meals. But the this smaller bottle does come in handy, especially when youre packing up no one wants to lug around a giant and heavy bottle of fuel and MSRs 11-ounce fuel bottle makes it easy not to have too.
