J.T. Eaton Spider And Cricket Traps: Can You Hear Their Screams?
Written: Jun 28, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Good for spiders and other insects but excellent for silverfish.
Cons:Freakin' sticky!
The Bottom Line: I am determined to be silverfish-free and these sticky traps are helping me win the war.
I don't think anyone really likes the thought of having insects in their home. Be it an occasional spider or an annoying cricket, it can be unnerving to turn on the light and see something staring back at you. Last year I had a small problem with silverfish; once or twice a week I would see one and kill it. The past couple of weeks I have killed at least twenty of them in various sizes but the colony seems limited to my office. Lucky me. I asked the exterminator if he could spray for them and he sort of chuckled. He sets squirrel traps outside [safe and human with a release in the 'country'] and sprays the back of the yard for spiders. He told me he couldn't spray for them without problems with the guinea pigs, even when I told him that they would not be allowed in the room he still wouldn't spray. What is a silverfish? If you have never seen one, they are pretty creepy looking. There are a couple different types of silverfish but the ones that are in my office are the basic garden variety. I have seen them in different sizes so that means that a female has laid eggs that have hatched. If you really want to know what a silverfish looks like, view this URL: http://www.information-and-facts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/get-rid-of-silverfish.jpg These little suckers are fast. If they are on a wall I can smash them with something but if there happens to be one on a book or doorframe they usually get away. I have a huge can of hairspray that I use to soak them but it doesn't do much to kill them. They are more common to see at night so if you are going to go on a hunt, the daytime is the best time to find a nest or to use a Shop Vac to get under baseboards. I still haven't found the nest but I have made a huge dent in the number of them using the J.T. Eaton Spider And Cricket Traps. Other sticky traps did not work; I would find an occasional ant or pill bug [potato bug] on the trap but no silverfish. The traps are easy to use; first you need to do some homework on what you are dealing with it see where 'it' might be hiding, if you need to clean an area and if you have pets that are going to be in that area. I put up a baby gate in the doorway to keep the dogs and guinea pigs out; just shutting the door wasn't enough peace of mind for me. I went with the "four corners" approach. I put one of them in each of the corners of the room after I use the Shop Vac around the edges of the baseboards. I did all of this early in the morning so I could make sure that they were sleeping or resting; the traps are sticky so make sure you handle them with care. I still have flashbacks of getting a fly trap stuck in my hair in the basement; nothing really prepares you for that kind of horror. I like that the traps are long and thin, they might not be the best size [ten inches long, two and a half inches wide] for some people but for this specific use they seem to be working perfectly. Within the first 48 hours I saw at least three silverfish per trap. I was happy with that but at the same time grossed out and had to take a shower. Silverfish are not something that are going to come at you and attack you, they will move away from you if you try to get near them but that does nothing for the icky feeling you get, you know .. that "there's something crawling on me" feeling. The packs were about four dollars but I am sure I could find them for less if I shopped around. Honestly, if they were ten dollars I would still buy them because they work for silverfish. You can't smell the bait that is used on them but it does seem to attract the little buggers; I am hoping to have the whole colony wiped out in the next couple of weeks. I don't want to get the floors sanded until this issue is resolved even though the dust from the sanding will probably kill them, I want them gone before I fork out the cash to have it done. This is a sticky trap so if you have cats, dogs or free running animals like my guinea pigs you are going to want to block off the area so there is no way that the are going to get near them. You are going to have to replace them every couple of weeks, especially if you have a fan running because dust and dirt will accumulate in it and reduce its sticking power. These are not the cheapest sticky traps you can get but they seem to be the only thing that works for silverfish. I like them so much that I am going to get a coupe of the other Eaton insect products for the wasps that make a yearly nest outside one of the windows and for the early fall when spiders make a mad dash from the cold weather. ^V^ ©Freak369 - 2012 ^V^ Ortho Home Defense Indoor & Outdoor Insect Killer Ortho Home Defense Perimeter & Indoor Insect Killer Pull-N-Spray Raid Ant Baits and Raid Wasp & Hornet Killer Ortho Bug-Geta Snail & Slug Killer Pharm Solutions Organic Garlic Insect Repellent PiC Flying Insect Killer [not hair friendly]
