| big_bill's Full Review: Ebisu |
Ebisu is a warm, inviting establishment that offers one of the best Japanese dining experiences in San Francisco. The service is prompt and polite, the sushi excellent, and the atmosphere energetic.
A resident of the Sunset, I patronize Ebisu two to three times a month and enjoy the experience each time. Some of the most fun can be had sitting at the bar itself, where the chefs are sure to introduce themselves and quickly transform your requests into edible art. They are as adept at preparing the most complex requests as they are the standard fare and are equally able to surprise (and delight) those adventurous enough to ask for the chef's own specialty. Ebisu has consistently served me perfectly fresh fish in properly apportioned servings of every sort of dish -- from nigiri, to hand-rolls, and specialty items.
Seating in the main dining area is close but sufficiently spread out, and the small size of the restaurant gives it an almost boisterous air of celebration on the busiest nights.
On the other hand, because Ebisu is small restaurant, patrons sometimes wait for as long as an hour for a table at peak times. Diners can often be seen overflowing onto the Ninth Avenue sidewalk on warm evenings, congregating in small groups (which happens to be a great way to meet other folks in the neighborhood!). But the continuous patronage of so many customers at a restaurant which clearly makes no attempt to dress itself up speaks directly to the quality of its food and service.
Ebisu is not a place "to be seen" but rather a place to appreciate and consume genuinely wonderful sushi in a buoyant, fun atmosphere. For those with the patience to wait for a table(or the foresight to grab a beer around the corner until it's ready!), this restaurant rewards many fold. For the rest, there are a thousand restaurants in San Francisco that will gladly serve as your second choice.
