Good food, poor service

I haven't lived in SF long enough to be able to say "best sushi in the city" with any confidence, but I can say that the sushi at Ebisu is very, very good. You won't be disappointed in the food. The service however.... Spotty is as nice as I can be. You know those warm towels they bring you to freshen up before you eat? Well, after using ours we had cold damp towels in front of use for the rest of the meal. But then they kept our tea mugs full. See what I mean by spotty?
I didn't like a couple of the things we ordered, but we were being a little adventurous perhaps. The only criticism of the food I would have is that it aims more for the California sushi style -- ie, lots of avocado and mixing big flavors together. Not my style really, but in fairness, all the food we got was tasty and definitely fresh. So if that's your style, definitely go for it.
The long wait for a table is all the proof that you need: people don't wait in line for bad sushi.
